Boxcar Baker & Deli is your neighbourhood spot for great coffee, fresh pastries, and a busy breakfast and lunch service that keeps the energy high from the moment we open.

This isn’t a traditional Sous Chef role, and that’s exactly why it works.

We’re looking for a Senior Chef who’s ready to step into their first kitchen leadership role, or a strong Senior Chef de Partie who’s looking for that next move with the right support around them.

You’ll work closely with our Head Chef, taking ownership of the kitchen when they’re off, while building confidence in leading a small, fast-moving team.

What the role looks like

As a Sous Chef, you’ll be part of a tight-knit kitchen team delivering a simple, well-executed menu focused on breakfast, brunch, and deli-style dishes.

It’s a bustling site; service is pacey, mornings are key.

You’ll:

• Step in to run the kitchen in the Head Chef’s absence

• Support and guide the team during service, setting the tone and keeping things moving

• Learn and take ownership of stock, ordering, and basic cost control

• Keep standards high, from prep through to plating

• Help create a positive, calm kitchen environment even when it’s busy

This is a hands-on role. You’ll be cooking, leading, and learning, all in the same shift.
