Studio Internship
Applicants must be:
- Currently studying, or recently graduated from, a Fashion Design, Pattern Cutting, Garment Technology, or closely related university-level course
This is an unpaid educational placement designed for fashion university students who want practical experience in pattern cutting and garment manufacturing. The placement is learning-focused, based on supervised participation and observation. What You’ll Be Involved In (Supervised Learning & Observation)
During the placement, you will learn through guided participation and observation, including:
- Observing and assisting with creating lay plans for production
- Supporting fabric laying for sampling and production (under supervision)
- Learning how patterns are drafted from client-provided sketches and technical drawings
- Assisting with pattern amendments following fittings
- Copying and developing basic blocks for learning purposes
- Supporting sample cutting and observing production cutting processes
- Learning correct fusing techniques for different fabrics
- Assisting with cutting trimmings (zips, elastics, hook-and-eye tapes, etc.)
- Supporting quality control checks, including garment checking and cleaning loose threads
- Assisting with preparing garments for packing and delivery
- Observing the full production process from client brief through to final delivery
By the end of the placement, students should be able to:
- Understand the role of pattern cutting and technical development in garment production
- Demonstrate improved understanding of pattern amendments and block development
- Understand how client designs are translated into production-ready garments
- Gain practical insight into fabric laying, cutting, and fusing techniques
- Recognise differences between jersey and woven fabrics in production
- Understand professional quality control procedures
- Observe the full garment production process from client brief to delivery
- Develop professional studio and factory working practices
As part of a professional studio environment, students are expected to keep their workspace tidy, put tools and materials away after use. Candidate Profile – Who We’re Looking For
We are seeking motivated, hands-on students or recent graduates who are genuinely interested in gaining real-world experience within a professional garment manufacturing and pattern cutting environment. This placement is best suited to individuals who are keen to learn, comfortable working in a studio/factory setting, and serious about developing technical industry skills. The ideal candidate will:
- Be currently studying, or have recently graduated from, a Fashion Design, Pattern Cutting, Garment Technology, or closely related university course
- Have a genuine interest in fashion production, textiles, pattern cutting, and garment manufacturing
- Have a positive, can-do attitude and a willingness to learn new skills
- Demonstrate good attention to detail and care when handling fabrics, patterns, and garments
- Be able to follow instructions carefully and work under supervision
- Be comfortable working as part of a team in a shared studio and factory environment
- Be reliable, punctual, and committed to agreed working days and hours
- Have basic knowledge of sewing, textiles, or pattern cutting (essential)
To ensure meaningful learning and continuity, applicants must be able to commit to:
- A minimum placement duration of 3 months
- At least 2 days per week
- Working hours: 8:30am to 4:00pm (1-hour lunch break)
- In-person attendance only at our North London studio (N18)
- This is an unpaid educational placement offered for learning and career development purposes
- All activities are carried out under supervision
- Interns are expected to behave professionally, including good timekeeping, clear communication, and respect for shared studio spaces
