HGV Class 2 Hiab

Lawsons (Whetstone) Ltd
Edgware, Greater London

Company Overview

Lawsons is the UK's largest independent fencing, timber, and builders' merchants, with 35 branches, around 700 employees and a £165 million turnover. Founded in 1921, we operate across London and the South East of England.

Role Purpose

We are recruiting an HGV Class 2 Hiab driver to join our Edgware team. This is a field-based, customer-facing role responsible for safely operating an HGV (Class 2) fitted with a Hiab to deliver materials to customers, load and unload on site using hydraulic lifting equipment, and represent the branch professionally. The successful candidate will be reliable, safety conscious and committed to delivering excellent customer service while maintaining vehicle and equipment standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate an HGV Class 2 vehicle (Category C) fitted with a Hiab to deliver and collect materials to customers’ sites, ensuring safe loading, unloading and placement of products.

  • Carry out pre- and post-trip vehicle checks, report defects promptly and ensure all vehicle paperwork and electronic records are completed accurately.

  • Safely operate the Hiab and associated lifting attachments in accordance with training and certified procedures; ensure loads are lifted and positioned without risk to people, property or the vehicle.

  • Load and secure vehicle loads in line with statutory and company guidelines, using appropriate load restraint and manual handling techniques where required.

  • Deliver high standards of customer service on-site, communicating professionally with customers and representing the Edgware branch positively.

  • Maintain accurate delivery records, obtain signatures and proof of delivery, and update branch systems with delivery notes and any discrepancies.

  • Work with yard and branch colleagues to co-ordinate delivery schedules, report late or failed deliveries and assist with route planning as required.

  • Adhere to company health and safety policies, complete required risk assessments, follow safe working procedures and use PPE at all times.

  • Ensure cleanliness and basic maintenance of the vehicle and Hiab equipment, report faults and arrange servicing as necessary.

Person Specification

  • Valid UK HGV Class 2 (Category C) driving licence with current Driver Qualification Card (CPC) and digital tachograph card (essential).

  • Valid Hiab/crane operator certification (e.g., Banksman & Hiab or equivalent) and evidence of relevant lifting equipment training (essential).

  • Proven experience operating an HGV with a Hiab or similar hydraulic crane, ideally within builders’ merchants, landscaping or construction sectors.

  • Good knowledge of vehicle safety checks, load security, slinging and safe manual handling techniques.

  • Excellent customer service skills with a professional, courteous approach and clear communication.

  • Able to work independently, manage time effectively and adapt to changing priorities and schedules.

  • Physically fit and able to undertake manual handling and outdoor work in all weather conditions.

  • IT literate to the extent of using mobile devices for delivery confirmation and basic branch systems.

  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and a commitment to follow company procedures and training.

  • Team player who works collaboratively with yard, branch and transport colleagues to achieve safe and efficient service delivery.

Working Hours, Salary and Benefits

  • Full-time, permanent position based at our Edgware branch.

  • Contracted hours Monday to Friday with early starts (typical shift 07:00–16:30 or 07.30 - 17.00) and Saturday working on a rota (1 in 2 - 8.00am - 12.00pm).

  • Competitive salary £42,840

  • 25 days holiday per year plus bank holidays and a celebration day, rising with service in line with company policy.

  • Company pension scheme.

  • Employee Assistance Programme and access to online GP services.

  • Comprehensive induction, ongoing training and clear progression opportunities within the business.

Why Join AVS Edgware?

  • Work for a well-established, family-owned company with a strong local reputation and commitment to service.

  • Be part of a supportive, team-focused environment where safety and customer service are prioritised.

  • Develop your career through structured training and clear progression pathways.

  • Play an important role in delivering outstanding service to trade and retail customers in Edgware and the surrounding area.

We are an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates. If you are reliable, safety-focused and take pride in delivering excellent on-site service, we would like to hear from you. #HP
