mechanical fitters
To install, maintain, repair, and refurbish,pipework, mechanical plant and equipment within the water and wastewater industry. The Mechanical Engineer / Fitter will ensure works are carried out safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards, in compliance with WIMES (Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specifications), client specifications, and health and safety regulations. Job Responsibilities
- Install, align, and commission mechanical plant and equipment, including pumps, pipework, valves, actuators, and associated systems.
- Carry out pipework installation in a range of materials and sizes, including Ductile Iron, Stainless Steel, Carbon Steel, UPVC, and ABS.
- Diameters from 25mm to 1200mm.
- Undertake pipe fitting, fabrication, and assembly in accordance with drawings and specifications.
- Perform planned maintenance, breakdown repairs, and refurbishment of mechanical assets.
- Conduct mechanical fault-finding, diagnostics, and corrective actions.
- Read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and method statements.
- Ensure compliance with all Health, Safety, and Environmental requirements, including safe use of lifting/handling equipment.
- Complete job records, maintenance reports, and compliance documentation.
- Liaise with supervisors, engineers, and client representatives to support project delivery.
- Contribute to quality control and handover documentation. No role profile can cover every issue which may arise within the post at various times. The post holder is expected to carry out other duties from time to time, which are broadly consistent with those described.
- Flexibility to travel to sites across Scotland
- Willingness to undertake overnight stays as required by project needs.
- Ability to work as a teams in varied and challenging site environments., · Sound understanding of mechanical engineering principles, including hydraulics, pneumatics, and rotating equipment. · In-depth knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes and associated mechanical systems. · Familiarity with pumps, motors, gearboxes, valves, pipework, compressors, screens, and mechanical treatment equipment. · Ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, P&IDs, manuals, and technical specifications. · Knowledge of condition monitoring techniques, fault diagnosis, and asset maintenance strategies. · Understanding of relevant standards, codes of practice, and regulatory requirements within the water industry. Practical & Maintenance Skills · Proven ability to carry out installation, commissioning, servicing, and repair of mechanical equipment. · Competence in alignment, balancing, bearing replacement, seal replacement, and pump overhauls. · Experience with preventative, corrective, and breakdown maintenance in operational environments. · Skilled in the use of hand tools, power tools, lifting equipment, and workshop machinery. · Ability to isolate, dismantle, reassemble, and test mechanical plant safely and effectively. Safety, Compliance & Quality · Strong knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations, including confined space entry, permit-to-work systems, and lock-out/tag-out procedures. · Awareness of risk assessments, method statements (RAMS), and safe systems of work. · Commitment to quality workmanship, asset protection, and environmental responsibility. Problem-Solving & Communication · Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to work under pressure and minimise downtime. · Effective communication skills to liaise with operations staff, engineers, supervisors, and contractors. · Ability to accurately complete maintenance records, reports, and compliance documentation. Personal Attributes · Self-motivated with the ability to work independently or as part of a team. · Flexible and responsive to operational priorities, including call-outs and emergency work. · Continuous improvement mindset with a willingness to undertake training and develop skills. Experience required 2 Years + in the water industry or similar type industry Essential Qualifications · Recognised Mechanical Apprenticeship, NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent qualification. · Proven experience in mechanical installation, maintenance, and refurbishment within the water industry or heavy industrial sector. · Demonstrable competence in pipework installation across ductile iron, stainless steel, carbon steel, UPVC, and ABS materials up to 1200mm diameter. · Knowledge of pumps, valves, rotating equipment, and mechanical systems. · Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications. · Competence in using hand tools, power tools, and pipework installation/fitting equipment. · Full UK driving licence. Desirable Qualifications · EUSR Water Hygiene card. · Confined space training. · SSSTS or equivalent site supervisory training. · Experience with welding, hot works, and advanced pipefitting techniques. · Knowledge of condition monitoring techniques (e.g., vibration analysis, laser alignment). · Familiarity with client-specific specifications and WIMES compliance
