We are a forward-thinking primary school in Edgware, North London, with a proud history of inclusive education. We have a well-established Additional Resource Provision (ARP) for pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) , including children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, speech and language difficulties, and social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs.

The Role

We are seeking a dedicated, patient, and motivated SEN / ARP Teaching Assistant to join our supportive and energetic team. The successful candidate will work closely with teachers, specialists, and support staff to deliver high-quality, personalised education to pupils with complex needs.

You will be responsible for supporting pupils both within the ARP classroom and in mainstream lessons , helping them access the curriculum and develop social, emotional, and communication skills. This role requires a proactive individual who can adapt quickly to different situations , demonstrate empathy, and implement strategies that promote positive behaviour and learning outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one or small group support for pupils with SEN, including those with ASD, ADHD, SEMH, and other learning difficulties.

  • Assist teachers with planning, preparing, and delivering lessons that meet the individual needs of pupils.

  • Implement behaviour management strategies to encourage positive behaviour and engagement.

  • Support pupils in developing independence, communication, and social skills .

  • Help pupils access mainstream lessons while providing appropriate scaffolding and support .

  • Monitor and record pupil progress, contributing to Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and regular review meetings.

  • Liaise with teachers, SENCo, therapists, and parents to ensure consistency of support and effective communication.

  • Supervise pupils during breaktimes, lunchtimes, and transitions , ensuring safety and inclusion.

  • Assist in assessment and feedback to inform teaching strategies and personalised learning plans.

  • Support the implementation of therapeutic interventions , including speech and language activities, occupational therapy exercises, or social skills sessions.

  • Promote a safe and inclusive environment , maintaining safeguarding and child protection procedures at all times.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous experience supporting SEN pupils in an educational setting, ideally in an ARP or mainstream classroom.

  • Strong understanding of Autism, ADHD, SEMH, and other complex needs .

  • Patience, empathy, and resilience to support children with challenging behaviour.

  • Excellent communication skills , both with children and adults.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team .

  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.

  • A proactive and flexible approach to problem-solving.

  • Knowledge of safeguarding, child protection, and health and safety policies.

  • Experience of using assistive technologies or educational software is desirable.

  • Relevant qualifications such as Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant, SEN Support, or NVQ in Childcare are preferred but not essential.
