The Occupational Health and Infection Prevention & Control Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNSIPC) has a pivotal role in the co-ordination and management of all matters pertaining to Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) in the service.

With the primary role of providing advice and support on the management of staff health and IPC in the Service the Occupational Health and Infection Prevention & Control. The CNSIPC will liaise with IPC and ensure effective IPC management is in operation in the service/Trust.

The post holder will lead on the management and delivery of the occupational health (OH) component of Trust Inductions and other large inductions; e.g. annual doctors’ inductions where occupational health is required to screen new staff into the organisation. The post holder will also lead on infection control matters relating to outbreaks managing and co-ordinating (OH nursing component) large outbreak lists acting as a specialist in the field advising staff accordingly on their fitness to work.

The role requires the post holder to work alongside senior OH nursing staff and OH medical staff in regards to public health matters which may impact on new starters or existing Trust staff or the fitness to practice of staff on wards where an outbreak has occurred.

Main duties of the job

  • Lead, develop and take continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient day to day operational management across all OHSWB sites where PH services are delivered to the Trust and commercial customers (where indicated
  • Lead and support PH service delivery during periods of change demonstrating tenacity, drive, professional integrity, balance and perspectiv
  • Build successful links between key professionals within the OHSWB and the wider Trust, the UKHSA and across SEL ICS to support and promote effective multi-disciplinary team working within the speciality
  • Ensure that SOHNs responsible for clinical operations are fully appraised of IPC activity and associated resource requirement working together collaboratively and cohesively to meet service demands.
  • To act as a professional nurse leader and role model to staff
  • Provide professional, clinical leadership and expertise in the speciality and to act as a resource for education and learning
  • Be wholly accountable for own practice in line with the NMC code of professional standards of practice and behaviour and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence
  • Be responsible for updating and maintaining professional knowledge in OH nursing and public health, actively facilitating own professional development through performance review

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• Attend internal and external clinical, multi-professional team meetings as required, liaising with other OH and PH professionals inside and outside of the Trust, presenting and sharing up to date knowledge and information to ensure best practice

• Represent the Trust as an expert practitioner/witness in OH at conferences, committees and tribunals

• Comply with the Trust’s standing financial instruction

Leadership

• To provide professional support to the occupational health practice nursing staff.

• Contribute to inducting new practice nurses and prepare induction programmes accordingly ensuring any new junior nursing staff are inducted according to local guidelines and policy.

• To contribute to and implement departmental processes, SOPs and clinical operating guidelines as directed by the senior nursing team.

• To ensure that any adverse incidents or risks are reported via Datix or to senior nursing staff.

• To ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and be responsible for the implementation of safe working practices within the Department of Occupational Health and Wellbeing.

• Ensure compliance with the Trust’s Equality and Diversity Policy.

• Promote and maintain good working relationships with other departments and the multi-disciplinary team.

• To be aware of wider Trust objectives, regional and national policy and their impact on local service delivery.

• To take a leadership role in a crisis situation or clinical emergency.

• Liaise with Medical Staffing, HR and relevant bodies or managers facilitating timely employment clearance.

• To assist in maintain standards of hygiene and cleanliness within the department.

• To attend and contribute to departmental meetings as required.

• To participate in all benchmarking and quality audits within the department such as SEQOHS or undertake specific project work related to clinical nursing activity.

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Significant post registration experience (General / adult nursing)
  • Educated to BSc / BA level or equivalent experience
  • Occupational Health Qualification (e.g. Certificate/Diploma)
  • Demonstrable clinical expertise in and commitment to the professional development of others

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience as a practice nurse in an Occupational Health service / department

Desirable criteria
  • Awareness and understanding of current health issues affecting NHS workforce
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel
