Lecturer in Urban Pollution (E&R) - Strand, London, WC2R 2LS
About us
The Department of Geography is a vibrant community of students, teachers and researchers. Our holistic approach encompasses both physical geography, environmental science, and human geography perspectives on global challenges and pressing environmental, social, urban and rural issues. Our research findings contribute to public debates and policy development at national and international scales, making important contributions to environmental protection, climate change, disasters, smart cities, risk regulation, water, human migration and wildfire hazards. We are also deeply committed to tackling pressing matters of social justice around the world. We undertake field research in over 95 countries across seven continents. Our John B Thornes laboratory supports teaching and research for a range of activities including water chemistry, sedimentology, geomorphology, hazards and fluid dynamics. Meanwhile, using London as a laboratory, our students and staff study air and water quality, migration, transport, housing, displacement, and health impacts on Londoners.

The successful candidate will specialise in physical geography and environmental science, leading innovative laboratory and field-based investigations into air, water, soil, and sediment pollution across diverse urban settings. They will develop an active research portfolio aligned with departmental strengths, securing external funding and producing outputs that inform policy, planning, and environmental management. The lecturer will design and deliver modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, incorporating practical fieldwork, analytical skills, and research-led learning. They will supervise student research projects and foster partnerships within King’s, across London, and with external stakeholders. The role also involves supporting departmental citizenship, promoting an inclusive and collaborative academic culture, and enhancing King’s global reputation in Physical Geography and Environmental Science.
