General Operative - Asphalt Plant Operations

A hands‑on role supporting safe, reliable and high‑quality production

We are looking for a committed and safety‑focused General Operative to join our asphalt production team. In this role, you will play a vital part in operating, inspecting and maintaining plant equipment to ensure we consistently deliver materials that meet our high-quality standards.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong work ethic, attention to detail and a desire to develop their skills within a fast-paced operational environment.

About the Role

As a General Operative, you will work across both static and mobile plant, supporting the safe and efficient running of the asphalt facility. You will carry out daily inspections, follow strict safety procedures, and ensure all equipment is operated correctly and efficiently.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Operating and monitoring the asphalt plant to ensure high-quality production

  • Planning next‑day production in line with customer requirements and plant capability

  • Managing plant start‑up and shut‑down processes

  • Conducting routine inspections, maintenance and minor repairs

  • Maintaining accurate records as required by site management

  • Refuelling static and mobile machines

  • Operating mobile plant such as Front-End Loaders (FEL) and dumpers for loading and material movement

  • Following manufacturer guidelines and Heidelberg Materials standards for maintenance

  • Supporting nearby Heidelberg Materials sites where required (travel support available)

Key Accountabilities

  • Safely and efficiently operate static and mobile plant

  • Maintain mobile equipment through refuelling, greasing and cleaning

  • Complete daily inspection sheets for all plant and equipment

  • Report defects or issues to the Site Supervisor promptly

  • Submit near miss reports in line with safety expectations

  • Operate machinery in an energy‑efficient manner

  • Demonstrate good timekeeping and reliability

Education and Qualifications

  • Good general education

  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety and Quarry Regulations (training provided where required)

  • EPIC certification to operate mobile plant

  • NVQ Level 2 in Mobile Plant Operations (or willingness to work toward this following EPIC completion)
