Year 1 Teacher - Bermondsey
We are seeking a committed, nurturing, and enthusiastic Year 1 Teacher to join a welcoming primary school in Bermondsey, starting as soon as possible. This role offers an exciting opportunity to teach pupils at a crucial transition point from Early Years into Key Stage 1, helping them build strong foundations in phonics, reading, writing, and maths while developing confidence and independence.

The Role
As a Year 1 Teacher, you will take full responsibility for your class, delivering engaging and well-structured lessons that meet the needs of a diverse group of learners. You will use assessment effectively to monitor progress, identify gaps, and adapt teaching accordingly. A strong focus on phonics, early writing, and numeracy will be central to the role.
You will work closely with teaching assistants, Key Stage 1 colleagues, and senior leaders to ensure consistency and continuity across the phase. Building positive relationships with parents and carers will also be an important part of your role, supporting pupils both in school and at home.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, deliver, and assess high-quality lessons across the Year 1 curriculum
Support pupils transitioning from Reception into Key Stage 1
Deliver structured phonics sessions and early reading interventions
Use assessment to track progress and inform future planning
Differentiate learning to meet the needs of all pupils, including SEND and EAL learners
Maintain a calm, structured, and inclusive classroom environment
Promote positive behaviour, independence, and resilience
Work collaboratively with teaching assistants and colleagues
Communicate effectively with parents and carers
Participate in staff meetings, planning sessions, and CPD opportunities
Who We’re Looking For
The ideal candidate will:
Hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Have experience teaching in Key Stage 1, ideally Year 1
Be confident in delivering phonics and early literacy
Have strong classroom management and organisational skills
Be reflective, adaptable, and enthusiastic
Demonstrate a clear commitment to inclusion and safeguarding
Work well as part of a team and contribute positively to school life
Early Career Teachers are encouraged to apply and will receive structured mentoring and support.
