Year 1 Teacher - Bermondsey

Marchant Recruitment
London

We are seeking a committed, nurturing, and enthusiastic Year 1 Teacher to join a welcoming primary school in Bermondsey, starting as soon as possible. This role offers an exciting opportunity to teach pupils at a crucial transition point from Early Years into Key Stage 1, helping them build strong foundations in phonics, reading, writing, and maths while developing confidence and independence.

The school is proud of its inclusive ethos and strong community values. Staff work collaboratively to ensure all pupils feel safe, supported, and motivated to learn. The leadership team is approachable and places a strong emphasis on professional development, wellbeing, and maintaining high standards of teaching and learning across the school.

The Role

As a Year 1 Teacher, you will take full responsibility for your class, delivering engaging and well-structured lessons that meet the needs of a diverse group of learners. You will use assessment effectively to monitor progress, identify gaps, and adapt teaching accordingly. A strong focus on phonics, early writing, and numeracy will be central to the role.

You will work closely with teaching assistants, Key Stage 1 colleagues, and senior leaders to ensure consistency and continuity across the phase. Building positive relationships with parents and carers will also be an important part of your role, supporting pupils both in school and at home.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, deliver, and assess high-quality lessons across the Year 1 curriculum

  • Support pupils transitioning from Reception into Key Stage 1

  • Deliver structured phonics sessions and early reading interventions

  • Use assessment to track progress and inform future planning

  • Differentiate learning to meet the needs of all pupils, including SEND and EAL learners

  • Maintain a calm, structured, and inclusive classroom environment

  • Promote positive behaviour, independence, and resilience

  • Work collaboratively with teaching assistants and colleagues

  • Communicate effectively with parents and carers

  • Participate in staff meetings, planning sessions, and CPD opportunities

Who We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate will:

  • Hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

  • Have experience teaching in Key Stage 1, ideally Year 1

  • Be confident in delivering phonics and early literacy

  • Have strong classroom management and organisational skills

  • Be reflective, adaptable, and enthusiastic

  • Demonstrate a clear commitment to inclusion and safeguarding

  • Work well as part of a team and contribute positively to school life

Early Career Teachers are encouraged to apply and will receive structured mentoring and support.

What the School Offers

  • A supportive and collaborative Key Stage 1 team

  • Clear planning frameworks and shared resources

  • Well-resourced classrooms and learning spaces

  • Opportunities for professional development and career progression

  • A leadership team that values staff wellbeing

  • Engaged pupils who are eager to learn

  • A positive, inclusive, and community-focused school culture

Location

The school is based in Bermondsey, with excellent public transport links and easy access across South London. The local community is vibrant and diverse, and the school is well connected to surrounding areas.

How to Apply

To apply, please forward an up-to-date copy of your CV, clearly outlining your experience and suitability for the role.

Start Date: ASAP

This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references. The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
