Product Legal & Payroll Advisor UK
Get to know us
Do you want to help us shape what the future of work will look like and how it will best embrace our life's aspirations? If this sounds like a journey you want to embark on, we may have the right role for you! PayFit is an intuitive cloud-based payroll and employee management solution designed specifically for SMBs. Since 2015, we have set ourselves a mission to simplify payroll for SMBs and enable employers and employees to grow together. We are a European company operating from 3 main countries (France, Spain, and the UK) where we are supporting over 20,000 clients.
Creating a fulfilling work environment and culture is also a core mission at PayFit, and our day-to-day work philosophy is reflected in our four values:
Care: We genuinely care for others whoever they are, whatever they think.
Excellence: We aim to improve and achieve better results every day.
Humility: Staying humble and exchanging transparent feedback helps us to grow and improve.
Passion: We are the architects of PayFit's success.
A key part of our culture , and essential for our success, is also improving the diversity of our teams and building an inclusive culture where you can be yourself at work.
This is why our recruitment focuses on the skills you demonstrate, and not only on your academic background or previous professional experiences. At PayFit, we understand that you can gain applicable skills through a variety of life experiences, and we are interested in knowing them, too.
Location :
You can work on this role from any place in the UK ( our office is in London)
We are looking for a Product Legal & Payroll Advisor to join our Product Compliance team and own UK payroll compliance at PayFit.
You will be the sole Product Compliance expert for the UK, responsible for ensuring that our payroll and HR software fully complies with UK legislation. You will sit at the crossroads of regulation, product, and customer experience — interpreting complex HMRC guidance and employment law, translating it into functional specifications, and validating the code produced by our Product Builders before it reaches customers.
This is a high-ownership role: you will be the go-to authority on UK payroll legislation within PayFit, and you will directly influence how our product evolves to stay compliant and competitive. You will report to the Product Compliance Director based in France and work closely with the UK Product Builders, Customer Success, Marketing, and Sales teams.
Key responsibilities
Legal watch & regulatory intelligence
Own the interpretation of UK payroll and HR legislation across Great Britain and Northern Ireland, defining PayFit’s compliance position.
Stay up to date with all relevant legislation, HMRC guidance, and case law; engage with industry bodies (e.g. CIPP, HMRC forums) to inform and influence interpretation.
Communicate forthcoming regulatory changes and their business impact to Product, Customer Success, Marketing, and Sales teams.
Product partnership
Own the end-to-end delivery of annual regulatory changes (e.g., new tax year updates), ensuring accurate and timely implementation within the product.
Translate legislation into clear functional specifications and work closely with Product Builders throughout the development lifecycle, from discovery to release.
Perform pre-production payroll testing to validate the accuracy of calculations for new features before they are released to customers.
Identify and prioritise continuous improvements to the existing payroll engine, and contribute to shaping the UK product roadmap.
Business enablement
Act as the final escalation point for complex payroll and compliance queries.
Enable Customer Success, Sales, and Marketing to operate confidently by defining product capabilities, limitations, and compliant use cases
Bridge the gap between legislation, product, and supporting teams by translating complex rules into clear, actionable guidance.
Knowledge sharing & thought leadership
Own the creation and maintenance of internal and external documentation related to regulatory changes (Help Centre articles, release notes, internal knowledge base).
Prepare and host customer and prospect-facing webinars on payroll topics in partnership with Marketing.
Review blog posts, marketing content, and press materials related to UK payroll to ensure accuracy.
What we are looking for
Must-haves:
Deep knowledge of UK payroll and HR legislation: at least 8 years of hands-on payroll experience. A CIPP qualification is a strong plus.
Payroll software experience: at least 2 years in a comparable role at a payroll software provider (e.g. writing specifications, performing payroll testing, supporting product teams). You have implemented solutions, not just advised on them.
Excellent communication: ability to document and explain complex legislative requirements to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Risk-based prioritisation: you know how to prioritise based on actual risks to the company and its customers, rather than solely on regulatory requirements.
Multitasking: the ability to manage requests from Product, Customer Success, Marketing, and Sales, organising your schedule meticulously and switching context effectively.
Nice-to-haves:
Experience engaging with HMRC or industry bodies to influence regulatory interpretation.
Curiosity about AI tools and willingness to explore how they can support compliance workflows.
Why join PayFit
Maximum ownership: you are the sole person responsible for UK product compliance - full decision-making authority and direct impact on the product.
Work From Anywhere: remote-first working policy with flexibility to work from anywhere in the UK.
Growth opportunity: grow alongside the UK PayFit branch as we continue to expand and refine our value proposition.
International setup: b e part of a European Product Compliance team (12 in France, 2 in Spain, 1 in the UK) that values collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Hiring process
Discovery call with a Talent Acquisition Specialist
Interview with the Global Compliance Director
Business case: prepare and present an analysis of a recent UK payroll regulation change for the Product Builders team. Presentation with the Product Compliance Director, CS Team Manager, and UK Product Builder Lead.
