We are seeking an inspirational and strategic Head of Science to lead a large and highly successful department at a dynamic secondary school in the desirable Battersea area of Wandsworth. This is a pivotal senior role for an experienced leader committed to fostering exceptional teaching and outstanding student outcomes across all three sciences.
The Vitals: What You'll Be Leading
As Head of Department, you will be responsible for the strategic direction, management, and continuous improvement of Science education from Key Stage 3 through to A-Level.
Key Leadership Responsibilities:
- Strategic Vision: Develop and implement an ambitious vision for the Science department, ensuring the curriculum is challenging, balanced, and prepares students exceptionally well for future academic pathways.
- Team Management: Lead, mentor, and performance-manage a large team of dedicated Science teachers and technicians (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics specialists), promoting a culture of professional growth and collaboration.
- Curriculum & Attainment: Oversee the planning and delivery of all Science qualifications (including separate and combined science GCSEs and A-Levels), analyzing data to drive intervention and ensure outstanding student progress.
- Resource Management: Manage the departmental budget, ensuring effective deployment of resources, maintenance of laboratories, and adherence to all health and safety protocols (CLEAPSS).
- Whole-School Impact: Serve as a key link between the department and the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), contributing to whole-school strategic development.
Candidate Profile: What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate will be an experienced teacher and leader with a proven track track record of raising standards in a Science department.
Essential Requirements:
- Qualification: A degree in a Science discipline (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics).
- Certification: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or a PGCE.
- Leadership Experience: Proven, successful experience as a Head of Department, Second in Department, or key curriculum leader within Science at the secondary level.
- Curriculum Expertise: Deep knowledge of the curriculum and examination specifications for Science at GCSE and A-Level .
- Skills: Exceptional leadership, communication, organizational, and data analysis skills.
