School Caretaker | Primary School | Barnet
The Opportunity
Barnet is one of London’s largest boroughs, known for its high-performing schools and expansive green spaces. We are seeking a diligent, proactive, and multi-skilled School Caretaker to join a welcoming primary school community. In this role, you will be the guardian of the school site, ensuring that the environment remains safe, clean, and inspiring for children to begin their educational journey in a secure and well-maintained setting.
The Role & Department
You will be the primary point of contact for all site-related matters, working closely with the Headteacher and the School Business Manager.
This is a "hands-on" role that requires a versatile individual capable of managing the unique daily needs of a primary setting, from playground safety checks to minor classroom repairs.
You will be a highly visible and valued member of the school staff, playing a key role in the daily life of the pupils and the security of the local community.
The school provides a supportive environment with a commitment to providing the necessary training for health and safety compliance and specialized site equipment.
Core Responsibilities
Daily Site Security: Responsibility for the opening and closing of the school gates and buildings, ensuring all alarms are operational and the perimeter is secure at all times.
Maintenance & Handyman Tasks: Carrying out essential repairs, including minor plumbing (unblocking sinks, fixing leaks), basic carpentry, and internal painting to maintain a high standard of decor.
Health & Safety Compliance: Conducting daily and weekly safety checks on play equipment, fire alarms, and water temperatures, ensuring all logs are updated for local authority audits in line with KCSiE guidelines.
Grounds & Porterage: Maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the school grounds, including managing waste disposal and the delivery of school supplies and furniture.
Contractor Support: Greeting and supervising external maintenance contractors and ensuring they follow the school’s safeguarding protocols while onsite.
The Successful Candidate We are looking for a reliable and friendly individual with a "can-do" attitude. Requirements include:
Experience: Proven experience in a maintenance, caretaking, or manual trade role (e.g., painting and decorating, DIY, or facilities management).
Technical Practicality: A sound understanding of basic building maintenance and the ability to use tools safely and effectively.
Safeguarding Awareness: An understanding of the importance of working in a child-centered environment and a commitment to maintaining a safe site.
Reliability: Exceptional punctuality and a proactive approach to identifying and fixing issues before they disrupt the school day.
Why Join Us?
A rewarding position where your work directly contributes to a positive learning environment for children in Barnet.
Access to ongoing professional development in health and safety, COSHH, and first aid.
The opportunity to work in a well-connected North London borough with excellent local amenities and transport links.
A stable, long-term role with a clear set of responsibilities and a strong sense of job satisfaction.

Please submit your current CV to begin the application process for this School Caretaker position. An enhanced DBS check will be required for the successful candidate.
