To work under the guidance of Teachers of the Deaf to support the learning and inclusion of Deaf pupils under the care of either the Primary Deaf Base at Griffins or the Secondary Deaf Centre, with integration into the linked mainstream school(s): Darrick Wood School, Darrick Wood Junior School, Darrick Wood Infant and Nursery School.
Essential requiremnts:
* Previous experience
* BSL Level 1 minimum
* GCSE Level 5 Maths and English
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Support for Pupils:
Work alongside pupils checking understanding and providing communication support
(Sign/notetaking/lip-speaking)
Provide pastoral support to pupils
Support pupils in the mainstream classes and in the Resource Base
Assist teachers with the implementation of all teaching and learning plans
Establish and maintain positive working relationships with pupils
Participate in and support mentoring arrangements for pupils
Promote Deaf Identity and Deaf and Hearing Awareness
Motivate pupils in order to develop their self — esteem
Provide feedback to pupils in relation to progress, achievement, behaviour, etc.
Deliver daily carry-over of Speech and Language targets/activities/strategies Undertake rehabilitation for new Cochlear Implanted pupils
Support for teachers:
Working alongside Teacher of the Deaf to establish a rich and inclusive learning experience by:
⦁ Participating in lesson planning, record keeping, evaluating and modifying, clarifying and adapting support materials and language
Contribute to assessment and evaluation of pupil progress to inform planning
Liaise with Teachers of the Deaf on pupil achievement, progress and monitoring of inclusion strategies
⦁ Liaise with Teachers of the Deaf on the management of audiological equipment
Support for the curriculum:
Implement agreed learning programmes and respond to individual needs / abilities
Be aware of a range of strategies to enhance teaching and learning to make schooling accessible Monitor the need for and use of specialist equipment
Be aware of and support diversity and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
Making resources to support learning and language development
Planning, preparing and delivering pre-and post-tutorials under the guidance of the Teacher of the Deaf
SKILLS & ABILITIES
A good command of English (written and spoken) is needed
Knowledge of Deaf Awareness and Equal Opportunities
Working knowledge of relevant Special Educational Needs policies and current legislation related to inclusion
Working knowledge of the National Curriculum
Understanding of child development and how children learn
Understanding of how to facilitate language development in young children with a hearing loss Excellent interpersonal skills
Ability to work as part of a professional team
Ability to use ICT effectively to support learning
Knowledge of multi — agency working
Ability to take initiative, be flexible and demonstrate creative thinking
KNOWLEDGE
Awareness of National Curriculum appropriate to the Key Stage Awareness of varied learning styles
Understanding of the impact of hearing loss/Deaf Awareness
EXPERIENCE
Experience of working with special needs children in a mainstream school
QUALIFICATIONS
GCSE Maths and English (A-C) or Grade 5 or above as a minimum
Level 3 qualifications (e.g. A-Levels, BTEC Level 3) are required
British Sign Language Minimum Level 1
Recent and relevant training in SEN / Deaf Awareness would be preferred
