Graduate SEMH Teaching Assistant – Islington, North London

Full-Time | Long-Term | Up to £650 per week | Immediate Start

The School

A welcoming and inclusive SEN school in Islington supporting pupils aged 5–16 with:

  • SEMH needs
  • Autism (ASC)
  • ADHD
  • Behavioural and communication difficulties
  • Trauma, attachment needs, and low emotional regulation

The school has a strong therapeutic ethos and works closely with counsellors, psychologists, and behaviour specialists to ensure every pupil receives personalised support.

The Role – Graduate SEMH Teaching Assistant

As a Graduate SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs
  • Use de-escalation, emotional regulation, and behaviour support strategies
  • Help pupils build confidence, resilience, and positive relationships
  • Support learning in the classroom and adapt activities based on individual needs
  • Work alongside teachers, SENCOs, and therapists to deliver tailored support plans
  • Assist with daily routines, safe spaces, and structured activities to promote wellbeing
  • Create a nurturing, calm, and consistent environment that helps students thrive

This is a high-impact role , ideal for graduates who want real experience working with vulnerable young people.

Person Specification

To be successful, you must:

  • Hold a degree in Psychology, Mental Health, Education, Criminology, Sociology, or a related field
  • Have graduated within the last two years
  • Be passionate about SEMH, mental health, and supporting vulnerable pupils
  • Have strong communication skills and emotional resilience
  • Be patient, empathetic, and calm under pressure
  • Any experience in youth work, behaviour mentoring, SEN support, mental health work, or children’s services is desirable (but not essential)
