The role is responsible for interpreting and applying UK pensions legislation, statutory instruments, and scheme specific regulations to ensure that calculations, processes, and system configuration are fully compliant and accurately reflect legislative and scheme requirements. The analyst will translate complex legislative change into clear, testable calculation specifications and support their implementation to high quality standards within agreed budgets and timescales.

Pensions experience is essential for this role. Experience in Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) and/or public sector pension scheme arrangements is highly desirable.

What you will do to be successful in this role

  • Act as a subject matter expert on pensions legislation and scheme rules, ensuring accurate and compliant benefit and contribution calculations.
  • Review legislation, statutory instruments, HMRC guidance, scheme regulations and actuarial guidance to identify required changes to benefit events, , and related calculations.
  • Produce clear, detailed calculation specifications and proformas that accurately reflect legislative requirements and scheme rules.
  • Define comprehensive test scenarios and test parameters to evidence compliance of calculations with legislation and scheme regulations.
  • Work closely with product and development teams to ensure that legislative and scheme requirements are correctly understood, implemented, and tested.
  • Liaise with clients, business partners, internal stakeholders, and external advisers (where applicable) to clarify scheme interpretations, confirm business rules, and validate legislative approaches.
  • Provide expert input into impact assessments for upcoming or proposed legislative and regulatory changes affecting pension schemes.
  • Support customer-facing teams (Customer Support, Service Delivery, Sales/Presales) by providing authoritative guidance on current pensions legislation and scheme rules.
  • Produce and maintain clear, accurate, and customer-facing documentation explaining legislative changes, calculation methodologies, and their practical implications.
  • Deliver internal training and knowledge-sharing sessions on pensions legislation, scheme rules, and calculation approaches to colleagues across the business.
  • Contribute to product roadmap discussions by highlighting legislative, regulatory, and market developments in the pensions sector.
  • Lead or support User Groups and other external forums to understand client needs, gather feedback on legislative changes, and explain how these are being addressed.
  • Assist in tenders and bids by providing authoritative pensions legislative content, responses to technical questions, and assurance on regulatory compliance.
  • Any other duties as defined by the leadership team that fall within the scope and spirit of the role.

Requirements

  • Proven experience working in pensions, for example within an in-house pensions team, third-party administrator, actuarial consultancy, or pensions software provider.
  • Strong and up-to-date understanding of UK pensions legislation and regulatory frameworks; public sector and/or LGPS experience is highly desirable but not essential.
  • Proven ability to review, interpret and extract relevant requirements from pensions regulations, scheme rules, actuarial guidance, and other technical documentation.
  • Strong track record in producing detailed calculation proformas/specifications and comprehensive test parameters that evidence legislative and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to explain and translate complex pensions legislation and scheme rules into clear, practical guidance for non-specialist colleagues (including technical, product, and customer-facing teams).
  • Highly analytical approach to problem solving, with strong attention to detail and a structured approach to validating calculation logic and edge cases.
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce high-quality documentation, guidance notes, and client-facing materials.
  • Excellent IT skills, including confident use of the Microsoft 365 suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
  • Able to manage multiple pieces of work concurrently and prioritise effectively.
  • Enjoys working as part of a team but is also capable of working independently, taking ownership of legislative analysis and specification tasks.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, with the confidence to challenge and influence where appropriate.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to other offices and customer sites when required.

Nice to haves

  • Experience of public sector and/or Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) arrangements, or other large defined benefit schemes.
  • Experience supporting or leading implementation of legislative change projects (e.g. remedy projects, scheme reform, tax changes, GMP-related projects).
  • An ability to influence and build relationships with stakeholders at all levels, including senior managers and external clients.
  • Strong customer-facing skills with the ability to represent the company in a confident, professional, and credible manner as a pensions subject matter expert.
  • Comfortable presenting complex legislative topics to customers, partners, and suppliers in a structured and accessible way.
