About Hiscox Re & ILS
We are located in Bermuda and London and underwrite reinsurance risks from around the world on behalf of our own and partner capital. Our team of over 100 smart and enthusiastic individuals are committed to providing top quality service to brokers and clients across a broad range of reinsurance products. We protect our clients’ assets against natural and man-made disasters, covering everything from earthquake and hurricane damage to cyber events, financial risks and terror attacks around the world. Our approach is simple; match the best underwriting risk against globally diversified capital. Our proactive, product-led underwriting approach is complemented by a commitment to world class service through purpose-built analytics and systems. We know our people are our biggest asset so finding and retaining the best talent is a priority.
About the North American Reinsurance team:
Our team operates across our London and Bermuda platforms, writing a range of Property Treaty reinsurance products for clients in North America. We are a market leader and with this comes the need for product innovation, excellent client and broker service and the ability to deploy meaningful capacity. We strive to create the best tools for analysing the various lines we write to ensure strong returns on capital.
Our team has an ambition to build the portfolio going forward, both within and outside our existing areas of expertise. This will require our underwriters to demonstrate an adaptable mindset, strong analytical capabilities, a commercial approach and an entrepreneurial attitude.
The opportunity
The (Senior) Underwriter role presents a significant opportunity to build a career in a top underwriting team. You will help continue to build Hiscox’s position as a market leader in Property Reinsurance in North America. To do so, you will need a full grasp of the fundamentals and be capable of applying the same irrespective of the nature of the risk before you. Moreover, you will need established links to the broking and underwriting communities which you can nurture to create opportunities for the North American portfolio. The individual should have the intellectual flexibility to take sound and rational decisions on all types of risk.
What we’re looking for
- A highly regarded (re)insurance professional with 3-7 years’ experience, preferably in underwriting, broking or cat modelling.
- A strategic mindset to enable an active role in setting the direction of the North America portfolio at Hiscox Re for the future.
- Evidence of the required technical aptitude to analyse, critique and improve actuarial and catastrophe modelling outputs.
- A successful track record of constructing and managing a balanced and diversified portfolio across multiple geographies, clients, brokers and lines of business.
- A firm grasp of reinsurance underwriting principles, risk selection, pricing methodologies and treaty structuring for both proportional and non-proportional products.
- Familiarity with catastrophe modelling tools (e.g. RMS, AIR and internal bespoke models).
- Prior experience working with third party capital would be an advantage.
- Proficiency in statistical analysis and comfort working with data analytics platforms (e.g. Excel, SQL, R, Python).
- A proven team player.
- Strong communicator.
