What skills and experience we're looking for

Main Job Purpose

Under the direction of the class teacher, to support pupils within the mainstream classroom to access learning, develop independence, and make progress across the curriculum.

Main Duties

1. Supporting Pupils’ Learning

Support pupils within the classroom, in small groups or on a one-to-one basis as directed by the class teacher. The exact tasks will vary according to pupils’ needs and the lesson objectives and may include:

• Clarifying and reinforcing teacher instructions
• Supporting pupils to use equipment and resources effectively
• Encouraging engagement, motivation and positive learning behaviours
• Assisting pupils who require additional help in areas such as reading, writing, spelling, handwriting, numeracy and presentation
• Helping pupils to maintain focus and complete tasks set by the teacher
• Promoting independence and confidence in learning
• Liaising with the class teacher and SENCo regarding pupil needs and support strategies
• Preparing and adapting learning resources as directed by the teacher

2. Supporting Pupils’ Wellbeing, Inclusion and Behaviour

• Promoting inclusion and positive relationships within the classroom
• Supporting pupils’ self-esteem, resilience and independence
• Reinforcing positive behaviour in line with the school’s behaviour policy
• Supporting pupils to manage emotions and behaviour appropriately
• Building supportive and professional relationships with pupils
• Supervising pupils during activities, transitions and educational visits as required

3. Supporting the Teacher

• Working closely with the class teacher to support lesson delivery
• Adapting and explaining learning activities to ensure pupils can access the curriculum
• Supporting assessment by observing pupils and feeding back progress or concerns to the teacher
• Contributing to the recording of pupil progress when required
• Undertaking clerical and practical tasks such as photocopying, preparing resources and displays

4. Supporting the Curriculum

• Supporting the delivery of English, Mathematics and other areas of the National Curriculum
• Assisting pupils across a range of subjects and learning activities, including practical and creative tasks
• Supporting pupils during whole-class teaching and independent work

5. Supporting the School

• Assisting with the preparation, organisation, storage and maintenance of classroom resources and equipment
• Supporting the upkeep of a safe, tidy and welcoming learning environment
• Administering minor first aid in accordance with school procedures and training
• Supporting playground or lunchtime supervision where required

Creativity and Innovation

The post holder works within school policies, procedures and agreed practices, under the direction of the class teacher, while showing initiative in supporting pupils’ learning and engagement.

Key Contacts and Relationships

The post holder will have regular contact with pupils, teachers and other school staff. Communication may also involve parents/carers and external professionals as appropriate, under the guidance of the teacher or senior staff.

Decision-Making

The post holder is expected to follow school policies and procedures and work within plans set by the class teacher. Any concerns should be reported promptly to the teacher or appropriate senior staff.

Resources

The post holder is expected to use school resources responsibly and appropriately but is not personally accountable for their overall security.

Working Environment

The post holder is primarily based in a classroom environment, which may be busy and noisy at times. The role may involve standing, bending or moving around the classroom to support pupils.

Knowledge and Skills

Previous experience in a school setting is desirable but not essential. New entrants should demonstrate:

• A positive and supportive approach to working with children and young people
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• A willingness to learn and develop effective classroom support strategies
• The ability to work effectively as part of a team
• Training and support will be provided through induction and ongoing professional development.
