The Resuscitation Practitioner supports the delivery of high-quality resuscitation services across the Trust, contributing to education, training, clinical practice, governance, and service improvement to ensure safe, effective, evidence-based care.

The postholder will deliver resuscitation training programmes for clinical and non-clinical staff using a variety of educational approaches, including simulation, clinical skills teaching, e-learning, and competency assessment. They will support staff in recognising and responding to clinical deterioration and cardiac arrest, ensuring compliance with national standards and Trust requirements.

The role includes providing expert clinical support during emergencies, responding to cardiac arrest and medical emergency calls within individual competence, and promoting effective multidisciplinary team working.

Working closely with Lead and Senior Resuscitation Practitioners, the postholder will contribute to the development of resuscitation policies, audits, quality improvement initiatives, clinical governance activities, and national audit programmes to support continuous improvement.

This cross-site role requires the delivery of training and operational support across all Trust sites. The postholder will act as a clinical expert and role model, maintaining specialist knowledge and promoting excellence in resuscitation practice, education, patient safety, and service development in line with current evidence and national guidance.

Main duties of the job

Deliver resuscitation training for clinical and non-clinical staff, supporting the development and maintenance of skills in basic, immediate, advanced and paediatric life support, emergency response, human factors, simulation training, and recognition of the deteriorating patient.

Use a range of educational methods, including e-learning, simulation, and competency-based assessment, to support learning and compliance with Trust and national standards. Provide training and advice to staff in high-risk clinical areas, promoting a positive learning environment and acting as a resource for resuscitation practice. Hold, or be willing to obtain within 12 months, an RCUK-accredited Level 3 instructor qualification.

Clinical Responsibilities

Maintain accountability for autonomous practice and ongoing professional development. Demonstrate and maintain competence in advanced resuscitation skills, including defibrillation, ECG interpretation, intravenous access and drug administration, pacing, advanced airway management, intraosseous access, and mechanical CPR devices.

Respond to adult, paediatric, neonatal, maternal, trauma and medical emergency calls, acting as team leader or multidisciplinary team member within individual competence. Support patients and relatives with information regarding resuscitation decisions where appropriate. Maintain clinical competence through regular practice and keep knowledge current through research, evidence, and national guidance.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post supports the delivery of high-quality resuscitation training and education across the Trust, ensuring staff maintain competence in CPR, defibrillation, airway management, and emergency response in line with Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) guidance and local policies. Working closely with Lead and Senior Resuscitation Practitioners, the postholder will assist in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of resuscitation training programmes for clinical and non-clinical staff.

They will contribute to the development, implementation, and review of Trust-wide resuscitation policies, ensuring compliance with national standards and best practice. The role includes participation in resuscitation audits, quality improvement projects, simulation training, cardiac arrest debriefs, and the National Cardiac Arrest Audit (NCAA). The postholder will also provide expert resuscitation support during emergency situations, promoting effective multidisciplinary teamwork and patient safety.

This cross-site role requires delivery of training and support across all Trust locations. The postholder will contribute to the operational management of the Resuscitation Service, helping to maintain an effective training programme that meets quality and performance standards. They will deputise for Senior Resuscitation Practitioners when required and provide specialist advice on resuscitation practice, training, governance, and equipment management. As a clinical expert and role model, the postholder will promote excellence in resuscitation care, education, and service development, ensuring alignment with current evidence, scientific guidance, and national recommendations.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Healthcare Professional (NMC/HCPC etc)
  • Educated to degree level
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • RCUK Level 3 Instructor course (ILS/PILS Instructor)

Desirable criteria
  • RCUK Level 4 Provider Course (ALS/EPALS/APLS/NLS)

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in planning and delivering care to deteriorating patients
  • Experience in delivering education in current role
  • Confident in delivery of education

Skills and Competencies

Essential criteria
  • Presentation skills within formal and informal settings.
  • Physically capable of resuscitation training, clinical resuscitation and moving manikins and equipment as required for training
  • Ability to interact well with all members of multi-professional team with diplomacy, persuasion & tact
  • Use of a wide range of skills including, negotiation, arbitration, consultation, and persuasion to engage Professionals in developing and changing practice.
  • Good organisational & time management skills.
  • Ability to use initiative, judgement, and work independently.
