About this role:
The Editorial Manager is the most senior member of our editorial team, responsible for managing – and contributing to – all written output on cpfc.co.uk , the Official Crystal Palace App and editorial publications (including marketing collateral, and supporting on Men’s and Women’s matchday programmes), as well as App push notifications.
With a communications-first mindset, the successful candidate will be expected to produce a broad range of written content, leading on the Men’s team but supporting on Women’s and Academy sides – and digital initiatives and marketing campaigns – when required.
We are seeking someone to deliver best-in-class storytelling which inspires, informs and connects with our supporters around the world, building off the platform of back-to-back trophy-winning campaigns, whilst also effectively managing our newly redeveloped digital estate on a daily basis.
Based primarily in our Central London offices, but with the flexibility to travel to Selhurst Park and our training facilities in Beckenham as the role demands, this role will be expected to work in the week.
They will also work approximately two-thirds of our Men’s first-team matchdays, both home and away, including in the UEFA Europa League (with subsequent lieu days to be agreed with the Head of Marketing).
In doing so, the successful candidate will develop relationships across the club and assist the football department, marketing, retail, ticketing, commercial, premium hospitality, and operations with their communication requirements. They will need to work at pace, with sensitivity and strong attention to detail.
The successful candidate will manage three editorial line reports (who work across the wider team, but who specialise in our Programme, Women’s and Academy content streams), as well as commission guest contributors.
Responsibilities:
Editorial Content
Lead website and Official Palace App content. The Editorial Manager writes the majority of digital content, which can amount to around 30 to 40 articles per week. These can include:
o Press releaseso Club announcements
o Matchday content (pre-match previews; match reports & live blogs; and post-match reaction and features)
o Short-form and long-form features
o Marketing collateral
o Retail & commercial promotions
o Supporter-focused updates
Produce engaging, emotive and innovative feature content that celebrates and showcases the important stories on our respective teams, and the wider club.
Commission and maintain the weekly editorial content schedule.
Manage a staffing schedule to ensure events/matches are appropriately covered.
Play a key role in the delivery of club and Premier League initiatives, such as those centring on Palace for All, Palace for Life Foundation, and Equality, Diversity & Inclusion campaigns.
Support with the production process of the Men’s and Women’s matchday programmes.
Proofread and edit contributors’ work where necessary.
Digital Management
Manage the website’s structure, with a key focus on keeping the newly redeveloped website and App homepages, tabs and news pages fresh and relevant to drive consumption.
Ensure that App Push notifications are delivered at an appropriate frequency to target audience(s) and maximise traffic and commercial goals.
Using Google Analytics and App analytics dashboards, the ideal candidate will monitor content consumption daily and adjust focus to drive growth.
Support colleagues in Marketing to ensure that ensure that campaigns / content / announcements are appropriately targeted to the desired audience(s) on digital channels.
Support the Head of Marketing in directing the continual development of cpfc.co.uk and the App, including working with our digital agency partners and raising support tickets.
Other
Work approximately two-thirds of Men’s first-team matchdays (with subsequent time off in lieu to be agreed with the Head of Marketing): home and away matches, including those in the Europa League.
Line manage the Editorial Executive & Programme Editor; Marketing & Communications Executive (leading on Palace Women); and Editorial Executive (leading on Palace Academy), including matchday rotas, time off and expenses.
Develop and maintain working relationships and key contacts across the club.
Other duties and responsibilities as required by line manager.
Upholding and promoting the Club’s policies and procedures, including Health and Safety, Safeguarding and Equal Opportunities policies and procedures.
Experience, Skills and Qualifications:
You have
A minimum of four years’ experience as a journalist/editor/sub-editor of a high-traffic digital platform (ideally working in professional football or digital media).
Experience of managing and delivering content in high-pressure environments, such as live sporting events.
Sound editorial judgement and an understanding of sensitivities around digital club content.
The ability to vary copy to fit audiences, platforms and our club house style.
Excellent communication skills.
Strong time management, organisational and prioritisation skills.
An eye for detail.
The ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously as we operate in a fast-moving environment with regular, tight deadlines.
Line management experienced preferred.
