Job Title: Graduate - Policy, Public Affairs and Research - FTC until March 2026
Reporting to (Job Title): Director of Policy
Objective of role: We are looking for a highly motivated graduate to join our Policy, Public Affairs and Research team. This is an excellent opportunity to begin a career at the heart of the financial and related professional services (FRPS) industry, working on the issues that shape the sector’s contribution to the UK economy and its global competitiveness.
The role offers hands-on experience across policy development, public affairs, member and stakeholder engagement, and advocacy.
You will support work on priority policy areas and assist in preparing engagement with government, regulators, members, and other stakeholders. You will also help prepare briefing materials for senior colleagues and committees, ensuring they are informed and equipped to represent the organisation effectively.

Key Activities & Responsibilities
Public Affairs
- Conduct research into political issues and monitor the major parties’ positions in relation to the financial and related professional services industry, to identify challenges and opportunities for TheCityUK and its members.
- Draft letters and emails to political stakeholders on issues of interest to TheCityUK; produce briefings and biographies of stakeholders to prepare the team ahead of meetings.
- Ensure details about all of TheCityUK’s public affairs engagements are promptly input into the CRM system.
- Support the team to organise a series of public affairs events with members and stakeholders. Develop a network with interns and researchers in the House of Commons and support our annual researchers’ reception.
- Shadow the public affairs team at meetings with MPs, researchers and other political stakeholders.
- Participate in team meetings and strategy sessions.
Policy
- Provide desk-top research support on key policy issues affecting the FRPS industry, including gathering and analysing information, and drafting written outputs.
- Assist in drafting briefings for meetings with government, regulators, industry stakeholders.
- Assist in the organisation of, and preparation of materials for, meetings of member policy governance and working groups.
- Manage the coordination and delivery of regular updates to cross-organisation planning and communication materials, such as policy lines and consultation responses.
- Support the organisation of, and preparation for, policy-focused events, roundtables and stakeholder meetings.
- Participate in and contribute to policy team meetings.
Wider teamwork
- Draft written correspondence, including letters and emails, on behalf of the Executive Committee and CEO for government ministers, senior officials, and industry stakeholders.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation to ensure coordination and alignment between policy, research and public affairs activity.
- Provide ad hoc support to the team, including project coordination and administrative tasks, as required.

- Policy, public affairs and research team
- The events team, when supporting the delivery of our events
- The corporate communications and marketing team, to ensure that our engagements and advocacy activities are promoted effectively on our media, social media and web channels
- The International team, when preparing briefings for political stakeholders with an interest in trade and international issues

- Members
- Political stakeholders including politicians, advisers, researchers and officials across the UK’s regions and nations
Person Specification
- An interest in public policy, politics and current affairs, and the financial and related professional services industry.
- Research and analytical skills.
- Ability to condense and communicate complex information clearly and concisely.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail.
- Good self-organisation skills, with the ability to take ownership of tasks to get things done and deliver multiple responsibilities in parallel.
- A collaborative and proactive can-do approach.
