Communications Manager

Purpose of Role: Developing and delivering integrated external communications campaigns and activities around The Crown Estate’s development pipeline and Rural business. These campaigns and activities will be delivered across our earned media and owned digital channels, supporting our business strategy and objectives. This role will involve managing both proactive and reactive media relations, and social media activities as part of a busy press office. While much of the work will focus on proactive campaigns and activities, it will also include managing reputational risk and incident management.
Main accountabilities:
Help develop and deliver integrated communications announcements and campaigns across The Crown Estate’s development pipeline (largely across workplace, science, innovation and technology, and residential sectors) and Rural business to support the business’ strategy and objectives.
Support the development team in the Urban Business Unit and the rural team in the Windsor & Rural business by leading the creation of proactive and reactive external communications, including press releases, briefing notes, op-eds and blogs.
Work with the business to raise the profile of our key spokespeople, identifying opportunities across the editorial media, owned channels, speaking opportunities and events.
Coach and counsel business leaders ahead of public speaking and press engagements, in line with our agreed corporate, portfolio and development pipeline messaging.
Play a key supporting role in The Crown Estate press office, working with the team to oversee news flows, responding to media enquiries, managing reputational risk and overseeing the out-of-hours responses when on duty.
Anticipate difficult issues and work with colleagues across the wider business to provide strategic advice around reputational impact, alongside proposed actions.
Work closely with our communications agencies to shape and deliver effective, timely communications activity for the development team, within budget.
Most important skills based requirements:
Proven track record of developing and delivering multichannel communications strategies and campaigns, which have demonstrably helped an organisation meet its strategic goals.
Demonstrable media relations experience within an in-house or agency press office.
Experience targeting and shaping perceptions among a range of primarily B2B audiences, covering a variety of complex issues.
A good network of media contacts, preferably within the property, science/innovation and/or general business sectors, with experience of developing and maintaining new contacts.
Excellent news sense and politically sensitive; able to identify risks – within the media or politically – and recommend mitigation actions.
Able to create multiple stories out of announcements across different communications channels.
First class writing skills and ability to translate complex issues into plain English are essential.
Experience of incident management and crisis communications.
Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to deal with people confidently at the most senior levels, both internally and externally.
