Caretaker - Progressive Secondary School in East London...
Start Date: September 2026
Contract: Full-time, Permanent (Shift-Pattern Framework)
Salary: Paid to scale (Inner London Support Framework)
The Role
A progressive Secondary School in Newham is seeking a professional, reliable, and highly organised Caretaker to join their dedicated site operations team. This hands-on role is essential for maintaining the security, cleanliness, and daily functionality of a busy urban campus, making it a fantastic opportunity for an adaptable professional looking for a stable role within a highly supportive environment.
The successful candidate will work across a rotating shift pattern to facilitate the secure opening and closing parameters of the school premises. Key responsibilities include conducting routine security sweeps, managing waste distribution tracks, preparing sports halls and classrooms for examinations or community events, and accepting logistical deliveries. You will also execute minor building repairs, including basic plumbing fixes, painting, minor carpentry, and patch maintenance, alongside conducting critical safety checks such as water temperature monitoring and fire door assessments.
You will maintain clear and professional communication with the Site Manager, school staff, and external contractors, responding efficiently to maintenance requests logged via the school’s digital helpdesk tracking system. Strong time-management skills are required to balance reactive porterage tasks with routine building compliance checks.
The school is looking for a proactive individual with a practical, solutions-focused mindset and comfortable basic IT literacy. A collaborative spirit and a commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment are essential to succeeding in this vital support role.
School Information
This is an 11 to 18 well-established School in Newham with a powerful commitment to community inclusion, operational excellence, and student welfare. Serving a vibrant and diverse East London community, the school boasts modern, high-spec facilities and a highly collaborative staff team culture.
The premises and caretaking team are treated as highly valued members of the school family. Senior leadership actively prioritizes manageable workflows, open communication, and funded pathways for continuous technical training and safety certifications (such as working at heights, manual handling, or COSHH training).
Requirements
Previous practical experience in caretaking, building maintenance, porterage, or a relevant trade discipline
Strong hands-on competency in basic DIY, painting, or fabric repair workflows
Good understanding of basic health and safety protocols and safe manual handling frameworks
Basic IT skills to access digital logging systems and update maintenance tickets
Ability to work flexibly across a rotating early/late shift framework
Application
To apply, please send your comprehensive CV as soon as possible.
