About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF GRACE’S PASSION AND DEDICATION

The Environment & Communities Directorate in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories. Where dedicated people like Grace are using their skills and passion to progress environmental action in the heart of London.

It was at university where Grace first started campaigning for improved recycling facilities, water refill stations, and other eco-friendly initiatives. When she saw the real difference people could make when they came together, she knew she wanted to dedicate her career to community action for the planet.

When she joined us as Principal Engagement Officer, Climate Emergency, she quickly established herself as a passionate advocate for community outreach, engaging various stakeholders across Westminster in the social causes, impacts and solutions to climate change, air pollution, and biodiversity loss.

Grace became a driving force behind our first Citizens’ Climate Assembly, which took place across two weekends in the summer of 2023. Fifty residents were chosen at random from across our diverse communities to come together, learn about the climate emergency, and deliberate how we overcome the barriers to becoming a net zero city by 2040. The assembly produced several recommendations which have informed the evolution of our Climate Emergency Action Plan. Due to the success of this initiative, we’re holding more assemblies to continue community involvement in local decision-making.

The Role:

As Relationship Officer – Insight & Engagement, you can make your own powerful contribution to innovative projects that will transform the wellbeing of the diverse communities across Westminster. You’ll join our multi-disciplinary ActiveWestminster team, which is dedicated to improving the health of everyone who lives, works and plays in our amazing borough, and gather the information we need to paint a picture of the positive ways in which our work transforms lives. Working to identify, recognise and understand the challenges that lie ahead for our service, you’ll use business intelligence to understand the impact of the data we hold, and how it can help our residents participate in the great range of leisure, sport and other physical activities we offer.

Committed to helping us develop new ways to gather data and demonstrate the positive impact of our programmes and initiatives, you’ll deliver locally based consultations to collect the insights and feedback we’ll need to refine our action plans and improve our services. A key part of your work will involve incorporating online and offline techniques such as survey-based insights, mobile ethnography, focus groups, interviews and workshops, and collaborating with our partners and stakeholders to create and promote activities, tools, resources, case studies and stories that share lessons and best practice models.

You’ll have a number of additional tasks – these include working to explore and understand the impact of projects and activities, engaging with internal and external stakeholders and partners to secure their commitment and collaboration towards the strategic objectives of our vital work, and collaborating with our Strategy and Intelligence team on key insight and communications initiatives. We’ll also expect you to support efforts to make our insights and research more accessible, continually seek best practice in everything you and the team do, and strive to identify and implement service improvements across the entire service.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information.

About You:

To be a success in this fascinating role you’ll have well developed experience of using quantitative and/or qualitative techniques to undertake research, be dedicated to improving practice, and have a practical understanding of KPI assessment and performance measurement. It’s important that you know how to develop infographics and work with data visualisation software, and in addition to the ability to analyse data and develop reports that meet our stakeholders’ needs, you’ll possess the skills to present information that reveals innovative new ways to reach our target audience.

We’ll look for experience of using CMS and CRM systems, the communication and interpersonal skills necessary to manage external agencies and work positively with customers and stakeholders, and good knowledge of similar projects undertaken by local authorities and the public sector. With this in mind, you should possess the ability to enthuse, persuade, negotiate and influence, and have a good understanding of the physical activity, leisure and sport sectors.

A superb organiser with the confidence to manage and prioritise multiple projects while meeting tight deadlines, you’ll have an enquiring and analytical mind-set, and be happy working both on your own initiative and as part of a tight-knit, collaborative team. When it comes to IT you should possess a good working knowledge of social media and the Microsoft and Adobe suites of software, and the skills to visualise data, share progress on KPIs, develop demographic information, and create infographics. We’ll also look for sound strategic, critical thinking and decision-making skills, and a strong commitment to equity, diversity and safeguarding and its practical application in the workplace.
