Senior Data Scientist
London United Kingdom Ref: 2029
Senior Data Scientist / Quantitative Modelling Lead – Supply Chain & Network Dynamics
ROLE OVERVIEW
We are looking for a Senior Quantitative Modelling Lead to own the development of advanced supply chain models used to strengthen resilience across critical national infrastructure and defence-related systems. This role sits at the intersection of mathematics, economics, data science, and real-world decision-making. You will take ownership of the mathematical direction of a growing modelling framework that helps governments and organisations understand how supply chains behave under disruption — and how they can recover. The work is intellectually deep, highly applied, and directly influences national-level policy and operational decisions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own the design and evolution of sophisticated supply chain and network models
- Build on an existing deterministic network allocation model and extend it into dynamic, time-based, and stochastic settings
- Shape how shocks propagate through supplier networks and how systems reallocate under constraint
- Extend current allocation mechanisms into more realistic, uncertainty-aware frameworks
- Improve representations of capacity limits, behavioural effects, and prioritisation under stress
- Introduce rigorous approaches to modelling uncertainty, including probabilistic and Bayesian techniques
- Apply causal inference methods to large, complex global supply chain and trade datasets
- Translate complex mathematical outputs into clear, defensible insights for non-technical audiences
- Support policy and operational decision-makers with evidence-based recommendations
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
- PhD or equivalent research experience in Mathematics, Econometrics, Operations Research, Supply Chain Analytics, or a closely related field
- Strong grounding in network models, optimisation, and equilibrium concepts
- Proven experience working with large, real-world datasets and applying causal inference
- Ability to think clearly across theory, data, and practical application
- Confidence explaining complex ideas to mixed technical and non-technical audiences
- Eligible for UK Security Clearance
Desirable
- Familiarity with Bayesian methods and probabilistic modelling
- Experience modelling supply chain networks, trade flows, or production systems
- Understanding of production functions and input-output modelling
- Practical coding ability in Python or similar
- Experience working in government, defence, infrastructure, or national-level economic contexts
Candidate Profile
- Intellectually rigorous with a strong applied mindset
- Motivated by high-impact, real-world problems
- Comfortable balancing theoretical depth with practical usefulness
- Confident communicating with senior stakeholders and non-technical audiences
- Drawn to long-term, meaningful work with genuine national outcomes
HOW TO APPLY To apply, please send your CV and a covering letter to Arran Goodridge via [email protected] quoting the role title in the subject line.
Salary: Competitive
Location: UK-based (hybrid working)
