Job overview
As Senior Forensic Nurse Examiner you will be responsible for the professional management and leadership of trainee Forensic Nurse Examiners, demonstrating a supportive and flexible leadership approach and a proactive, responsible attitude to promote confidence in the team and the service.
You will develop and maintain a team of trainee and Forensic Nurse examiners to ensure effective, financially efficient and excellent standards of patient care underpinned by trauma-informed practice
You will lead on the management of individual episodes of client care for clients independently and autonomously carrying out forensic medical examinations and collection of evidence post sexual assault
The post holder will also be required to participate in overnight shifts which are included as part of a monthly rotational shift pattern and weekday nighttime shift hours are currently 23:00 – 06:30.
In addition, to this monthly rotational shift pattern, the post holder will also be required to participate in the out of hours on-call rota to support the delivery of 24/7 cover. These shifts are during the week at night and during the day and night at weekends and on Public (Bank) holidays to support the delivery of 24/7 cover. This is paid at an examiner rate and claimed through Havens Pay claims.
It is likely that the service delivery model and shift patterns for out-of-hours provision will change following the move to the single Havens site
Main duties of the job
To be accountable for your own practice and to utilise available opportunities to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence
As a Senior Forensic Nurse examiner will provide advanced level, autonomous nursing care to clients following sexual assault, this will include providing immediate aftercare
You will autonomously complete a forensic medical examination as appropriate for the purpose of the collection of forensic evidence, this will include being proficient in the use of the colposcope and digital photography.
As a Senior Forensic Nurse Examiner, you will maintain a high standard of safeguarding for clients by directly supporting the nursing and wider teams to ensure they are aware and compliant with adult and child safeguarding training and procedures.
As a senior nurse in the team, you will provide clinical leadership within the multi professional team to ensure the delivery of care and professional practice in line with Kings values

The major responsibility of the post-holder will be to take referrals, provide advice and carry out forensic medical examinations for victims of sexual assault. These are detailed examinations, which must meet strict standards in terms of recording information, sample collection and handling, and avoiding DNA contamination. The examination of victims of sexual assault and rape includes the assessment of risk of pregnancy, Sexually Transmitted Infections/Blood-borne Viruses and administering emergency contraception, HIV prophylaxis (PEPSE), Hepatitis B vaccination as required, in addition to mental health assessments and safeguarding. Examiners will also make onward referrals to support agencies.
Subsequently a witness statement may be requested by the police and the post-holder may be required to attend court to give evidence.
The successful post holder(s) will be line managed by senior clinicians and will be given comprehensive training and ongoing support in the role.
Post holders will be required to provide a DNA elimination sample, prior to commencing work within the service.
Post holders will work collaboratively with Forensic Nurses, Crisis Worker’s, Paediatricians, Specially Trained Police Officers (SOITs) and other professionals to support clients.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Current NMC Registered Nurse (Adult)
- Non-medical prescribing course
- Teaching or mentorship qualification or equivalent
- Evidence of current continuing professional development
- Recognised qualification / training or relevant experience in contraception and sexual health and evidence of associated competencies
- Practising forensic nurse examiner and evidence of successful completion of associated competencies
- Advanced Physical assessment course
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of a master’s degree in healthcare or willingness to work towards
- Recognised FFLM qualification such as the DFCASA or FFLM licentiate or willingness to work towards
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience of working as a nurse practitioner / examiner with clients who disclose sexual assault
- Experienced and competent in clinical history taking, examination and diagnosis
- Significant clinical experience managing clients with complex needs
- Relevant experience of clinical nursing practice in a sexual health / contraception setting
- Demonstrable knowledge of Local and Surface Anatomy and Physiology
- Understanding of recognized standards & policies related to the speciality
- Experience of working in partnership with multi- professional teams.
- Knowledge of current developments in nursing and with particular emphasis on sexual assault services
- Detailed knowledge regarding safeguarding issues (adult and child), the statutory frameworks that apply, experience of managing safeguarding issues and ability to act upon concerns
- Experience of conducting clinical audit
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in ED / Urgent Care Centre
- Experience of Nursing research
