The post holder must be a qualified midwife with at least three years’ experience and evidence of continuous professional development.

This role requires frontline leadership with management responsibility for core hospital-based services, including resource management, audit and quality monitoring, data collection, clinical leadership, and staff deployment. You will help create an environment where women are central to decision‑making and high‑quality, safe, compassionate care is the primary focus.

You will act as an expert resource to the multidisciplinary team, ensuring all staff work professionally and all registered staff practise as accountable clinicians.

Strong clinical leadership is essential, with the ability to inspire, motivate, and empower others. You should be highly visible and accessible to women, families, and staff.

As a senior midwifery role, the post holder is expected to participate fully in the clinical and professional leadership of the department.

You should have a solid understanding of ward and department leadership, be up to date with evidence‑based practice, and understand current professional issues including the National Maternity Review and Safer Maternity Care agendas.

The role requires the ability to coordinate and liaise with senior multidisciplinary services, and to prioritise and manage your own workload and that of the team.

Main duties of the job

To be a highly competent, knowledgeable and visible midwifery practitioner, ensuring the provision of excellent, evidence based care for service users.

To co-ordinate and implement the care of birthing people through Labour Ward, Triage and Midwifery lead suite, who may be high or low risk.

Need to understanding fundamental and complex midwifery duties to include assessment and evaluation of care ensuring, the timely and appropriate movement of patients to facilitate good flow through the unit.

To act as an advocate for the birthing people ensuring the provision of appropriate information and support services.

Ensure effective communication, in all circumstances, between all members of the multi-disciplinary team, other hospital departments, relatives and visitors.

Lead and promote National standards, ensuring the compliance of BSOTs within our Triage to enhance the safety of service uses and encourage appropriate escalation.

Involvement in Auditing (MEG) and improving standards and change management.

Ensure all appropriate staff are competent in the administration of medications.

Ensure that all staff are aware of the importance of Equipment checks, safe handling, use, reporting and maintenance of equipment in the department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To directly line manage staff within the area of responsibility and monitor team workload.

Co-ordinate off duty ensuring a relevant skill mix.
To be responsible for the leadership and operational management of the Labour Ward /MAU, informing the clinical lead of anything that threatens to affect the safety of the environment or compromise the care of the patients.

To manage and maximise the use of midwifery and nursing resources within the agreed budget, working closely with the Matrons and clinical lead for inpatients.

Responsible for the real time completion of the Acuity Tool with escalation to the matron team or manager on call as required.

Overall Responsibility for making sure the emergency equipment’s is checked by the team.

Manage midwifery recruitment.

To manage sickness/absences and, working with the Matron and Human Resources to reduce sickness levels.

To ensure staffs adhere to the Trust disciplinary rules and behavioural standards and manage staffs if they fall short of the required standard.

To manage the appraisal process and ensure that all staff have the opportunity to review their performance and develop a meaningful professional development plan.

To ensure all staff knows where to access Trust policies and clinical procedures guidelines and that staff adhere to these at all times.

To be responsible for the implementation and governance agenda in the department

Initiate and develop audits of service delivery and implementation of findings to improve patient care.

Be responsible for ensuring the implementation of risk management processes within the department

Person specification

Skills and Ability, Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife with three years’ experience and current NMC registration.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and compliance with revalidation requirements.
  • PROMPT / acute obstetric emergency training (or equivalent multidisciplinary training).
  • Substantial post‑registration experience working within intrapartum settings, including complex and high‑risk labour care.
  • Demonstrable experience in managing the clinical co‑ordination of a Labour Ward or equivalent acute maternity unit.
  • A good understanding of the National Maternity review and Safer Maternity Care agenda/ CNST maternity incentive scheme etc.
  • Competence in managing high‑risk intrapartum care, obstetric emergencies, and multidisciplinary escalation.
  • Confident and competent in perineal suturing, cannulation, swab safety, OASI Care bundle, and the ability to motivate, support, and mentor staff at all levels to develop.

Desirable criteria
  • Degree in Midwifery or related health subject (BSc).
  • Experience of managing/leading change within a clinical area
  • Experience contributing to service improvement, audits, and clinical governance activities.
  • Post-graduate management/leadership qualification and / or equivalent level of knowledge gained through extensive experience
