Consultant In Respiratory Medicine - Focus in Severe Asthma

Job summary
AWAITING RCP APPROVAL This appointment is for a full-time consultant respiratory physician who will be primarily working at the Royal Brompton Hospital site of the GSTT Severe Asthma Service. Prior to the merger, Guy's and Royal Brompton each hosted the two largest asthma services in the UK. The newly formed cross-site GSTT service is the largest of its kind in the world with an international reputation for excellence and over three thousand patients on biologic therapies for asthma and related eosinophilic lung diseases.Alongside the biologic service is an equally important and well-respected service providing highly specialist assessment and management of patients with upper and large airway abnormalities as well as complex breathlessness. The appointee will work across these two aligned areas joining a team of a consultants based at RBH and Guy's as well as an experienced multidisciplinary team of specialist nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, clinical psychologists and speech and language therapists.

Main duties of the job
Provide High Quality Care to Patients o The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC full and specialist registration and hold a current licence to practise o To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post. Performance Management o To work with medical, nursing, laboratory and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas: o Clinical efficiency e.g. LOS reductions, reducing cancelled operations and DNA rates. Medical Staff Management o To work with colleagues to ensure junior doctors' hours are compliant in line with EWTD and New Deal. o To ensure that adequate systems and procedures are in place to control and monitor leave for junior medical staff and to ensure that there is appropriate cover within the clinical areas, including on-call commitments Governance o To review clinical outcomes in designated area using external benchmarking data where appropriate, to identify and advise variances to the Clinical Director. o Participate in ensuring NICE requirements are reviewed and implemented and monitored in the speciality areas. Strategy and Business Planning o To participate in the business planning and objective setting process for the directorate and Trust where appropriate. o To represent the Trust at appropriate clinical networks/other external clinical meetings, as delegated by the Clinical Director.

Person Specification
Qualifications/Training
Essential

• Eligible for full UK GMC registration and a Licence to Practise
• MRCP or equivalent
• CCT in respiratory medicine

Desirable

• Higher degree (PhD or MD) in the field of asthma

Clinical Experience
Essential

• Clinical experience in severe asthma including the use of biologic therapies

Desirable

• Specialist training at an NHSE commissioned Severe Asthma Centre
• Clinical experience of managing cough and upper airway dysfunction
• Clinical experience of managing eosinophilic lung diseases

Clinical Skills / knowledge and abilities
Essential

• Peer reviewed publications in the field of asthma
• Undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching experience
• Experience of clinical audit
• Experience of supporting recruitment to clinical trials and /or clinical research

Desirable

• Presentations at National and/or International Respiratory Congresses
