Teacher of Design and Technology (0.5 FTE)

Kew House School is seeking to appoint a highly motivated, ambitious and dynamic Teacher of Design and Technology. The successful candidate will be a hardworking professional, committed to thorough lesson planning, enthusiastic delivery and careful assessment.

Design and Technology is a very important element of the school’s curriculum. The specialist area of Design & Technology taught is resistant materials, covering wood, metal, and polymers. The department is equipped with outstanding facilities — two specialist areas, a fully equipped workshop, and a CAD/CAM room with 24 PCs running Adobe Creative Cloud, 2D Design and SolidWorks. The CAD/CAM area is equipped to a very high standard, including 3D printers, a large laser cutter, a CNC router and a sublimation printer with a heat press. The Workshop is well equipped with tools and machinery and includes a band saw, pillar drills, and a brazing hearth for metal casting and welding. The department has full-time technician support.

At Key Stage 3, the school operates a carousel system moving on a termly basis between Design and Technology, Food Technology and Art. GCSE Design and Technology is then offered from Year 9 onwards, following the AQA specification, with a healthy uptake at both GCSE and A Level. After-school clubs offer great scope for extension — including the popular Formula 24 club and a CAD/CAM Club.

This is a part-time position (0.5 FTE), permanent, starting as soon as possible. Reporting to the Head of Design and Technology.

The role would suit ECTs as well as experienced teachers.

MAIN DUTIES

What you’ll be doing, day to day.

1. Plan, prepare and deliver engaging, well-structured Design and Technology lessons at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A Level, in line with the AQA specification.

2. Set appropriate learning expectations and targets for improvement, motivating and challenging pupils to raise attainment.

3. Develop and maintain outstanding curriculum resources, lesson sequences and schemes of work across the Design and Technology curriculum.

4. Use a range of teaching styles and methods, including ICT and CAD/CAM packages such as 2D Design, SolidWorks and Adobe Creative Cloud.

5. Foster a culture of high expectations for practical work and delivery of challenging content within the department.

6. Use the full range of Workshop and CAD/CAM facilities safely and effectively — including the 3D printers, laser cutter, CNC router, and sublimation printer.

7. Uphold and promote Health and Safety in the workshop and CAD/CAM room at all times, holding appropriate certification (training available if required).

8. Assess, mark and provide feedback on pupils’ work in line with departmental and whole-school policy.

9. Offer additional revision sessions and subject clinics throughout the year, where necessary, to support pupil progress.

10. Contribute to after-school clubs and enrichment, including the popular Formula 24 club and CAD/CAM Club.

11. Participate fully in the wider co-curricular life of the school by engaging with clubs, trips and societies.

12. Work collaboratively with the Head of Design and Technology, the department technician and colleagues across the school.

13. Contribute to the safeguarding and welfare of pupils in accordance with the school’s safeguarding policies and Keeping Children Safe in Education.

14. Undertake such other reasonable duties as may be required by the Head of Department and Headmaster.

• Ability/experience teaching Design & Technology at GCSE

• Experience with workshop machines, materials and processes

• Experience developing resources, lesson sequences and schemes of work

Desirable

• Experience teaching Design & Technology at A Level

• Experience delivering the AQA Design & Technology specification

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:

Essential

• CAD skills: 2D Design, SolidWorks and Adobe Creative Cloud

• Ability to develop curriculum materials for GCSE and A Level

• Confident use of ICT

• Knowledge of relevant Health & Safety requirements

Desirable

• Familiarity with 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC routers and sublimation printers

Kew House School partners with Quintin Boat Club on the tidal Thames next to Chiswick Bridge, and has recently opened a new gym facility at Pier House next to Kew Bridge. Pupils participate in an extensive co-curricular programme, and the Design and Technology department contributes through clubs including Formula 24 and CAD/CAM.
