The Role
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEN/ARP Teaching Assistant to join our team. This role is ideal for someone with experience supporting children with complex needs , who is patient, empathetic, and motivated to make a difference.
The successful candidate will provide one-to-one and small group support , working alongside teachers to deliver the curriculum in ways that meet the needs of all pupils. You will assist with implementing individual learning plans (ILPs) , behaviour support strategies, and personalised interventions designed to maximise each child’s learning potential.
The role requires flexibility, creativity, and resilience, as well as excellent communication skills to liaise effectively with teachers, parents, and multi-agency professionals. You will help create a positive, structured, and engaging learning environment where pupils feel safe, understood, and motivated to learn.
Key Responsibilities
Provide direct support for pupils with SEN and complex needs , including those in the ARP, both in the classroom and during specialist sessions.
Implement individual learning plans (ILPs) and behaviour support plans, following guidance from teachers, SENCO, and external professionals.
Deliver personalised teaching interventions in literacy, numeracy, social communication, and life skills.
Support pupils in developing independence, emotional regulation, and social interaction skills .
Assist in assessing pupil progress , maintaining detailed records, and contributing to reports and review meetings.
Work closely with teachers and ARP staff to adapt teaching strategies and resources to suit individual needs.
Support the management of challenging behaviour , implementing positive behaviour support strategies to maintain a safe and calm learning environment.
Contribute to the planning and delivery of enrichment activities , including arts, outdoor learning, and sensory experiences.
Supervise pupils during breaks, lunchtime, and transitions , ensuring their safety and wellbeing.
Communicate effectively with parents and carers , providing feedback on progress, achievements, and areas for development.
Collaborate with multi-agency professionals , including speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and educational psychologists, to support holistic development.
Maintain classroom resources, visual timetables, and specialist equipment to support learning and engagement.
Attend training and professional development sessions to keep up to date with best practices in SEN and ARP provision.
Person Specification
The ideal candidate will:
Have experience working with pupils with SEN, complex needs, or in ARP settings , including children with ASD, ADHD, or learning delays.
Demonstrate patience, empathy, and resilience , with the ability to support pupils through challenging behaviours and situations.
Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills , able to build positive relationships with pupils, parents, and colleagues.
Be proactive, highly organised, and able to prioritise tasks in a dynamic classroom environment .
Have knowledge of SEN frameworks, behaviour management strategies, and personalised learning approaches .
Be confident in supporting pupils’ social-emotional development, mental health, and wellbeing .
Hold relevant qualifications such as Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant, SEN, or equivalent experience .
Be committed to safeguarding, child protection, and promoting inclusion for all pupils.
Work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative multi-disciplinary team .
