Pastoral Manager – Independent School – Harrow
Start Date: As soon as possible
Contract: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: Paid to scale
School Information:
This is a prestigious 11 to 18 co-educational Independent School located in Harrow. The school is celebrated for its exceptional pastoral care, strong holistic education model, and long-standing commitment to developing confident, well-rounded young people. With small class sizes, modern facilities, and a nurturing ethos grounded in respect, wellbeing, and academic ambition, the school has established itself as one of the most respected independent schools in the Greater London region.
The student body is diverse, articulate, and highly engaged, contributing to a school culture centred on kindness, inclusion, and mutual support. Behaviour is outstanding, and the school’s pastoral systems have been repeatedly praised by inspectors and parents alike. Staff wellbeing is prioritised through structured pastoral training, clear communication, and a caring community-driven environment.
The school has invested heavily in its pastoral provision, including counselling services, wellbeing programmes, behaviour mentors, enrichment opportunities, and student leadership initiatives. This makes it an excellent setting for a committed Pastoral Manager seeking a role where they can genuinely impact young people’s lives.
Pastoral Department:
The Pastoral Department is the emotional and behavioural backbone of the school, providing tailored support to students facing challenges. As Pastoral Manager, you will work closely with Heads of Year, tutors, the safeguarding team, SEN staff, and the Deputy Head (Pastoral) to ensure that every student feels safe, heard, and fully supported.
Core responsibilities include:
• Managing day-to-day pastoral issues for assigned year groups.
• Leading behaviour intervention plans and wellbeing strategies.
• Maintaining pastoral logs, safeguarding documentation, and communication records.
• Working with families to support students through social, emotional, or behavioural concerns.
• Liaising with external agencies when required.
• Supporting attendance and punctuality initiatives.
• Helping run wellbeing workshops, assemblies, and mentoring programmes.
• Supervising pastoral staff or behaviour mentors.
• Contributing to whole-school policies on behaviour, anti-bullying, and inclusion.
The department operates with compassion, structure, and high expectations. You will be a role model of consistency, empathy, and professionalism, supporting students to develop resilience and positive behaviour patterns.
Requirements:
• Experience in a pastoral, safeguarding, or behaviour-focused role.
• Strong understanding of adolescent wellbeing and school pastoral systems.
• Excellent communication, active listening, and conflict-resolution skills.
• Ability to work with sensitivity, confidentiality, and professionalism.
• Strong organisational ability and calmness under pressure.
• Experience working with external agencies (e.g., CAMHS, social services).
• Commitment to safeguarding and child protection.
