Our dynamic Knit /fashion department inspires creativity and innovation, working closely with students at all levels to help them realise their ambitions. As Knit Technician you will play a key role in this vibrant, student-centred environment. You’ll work collaboratively with staff and students, providing technical expertise and guidance to support the delivery of outstanding fashion education.
We are looking to appoint a Knitwear Technician to provide a professional and fully integrated technical service supporting teaching, research and enterprise. To Contribute to a student-centred culture within the faculty’s workshops, to underpin the collective aims of the faculty, through the ethos of ‘Thinking through Making’, so that there is a clear understanding of how meaningful and disciplined workshop practice can effectively support the development of ambitious student work.
Key responsibilities
To assist and liaise with Senior Knit technician when working in line with our ‘Open Access policy here at the University, allowing students from all courses to develop knit skills’. Development of technical support and resources in line with the faculty’s Strategy and Academic Plan. To ensure the safe operation of all processes within the faculty’s workshops and support the University’s Health and Safety Policy. To be confident and able to use and instruct on Domestic and Dubied knit machines, and linkers, to produce garments and knit swatches to a high standard.
To work closely with the Senior Knit technicians and Fashion Workshop Manager to provide students with expert support and guidance for the development of their work.
To encourage students’ exploration of yarns and/or processes/techniques/ applications, as appropriate, for the successful and creative realisation of their work.
To undertake workshop-based training/formal instruction or demonstrating to groups of students or individuals which may include contributing to the assessment of student work.
To assist with inclusion of this in the technical service of the faculty, evaluating risks and assessing implications for the faculty.
Undertake frontline and regular operational and maintenance requirements relating to Health and Safety are in place with students and other users of the technical resources.
To Ensure the Knit room is kept clean and tidy daily for students use and all equipment used is replaced and in full working order.
Ensuring that Health and Safety requirements are observed and implemented.
To take responsibility for testing, maintenance and use of equipment, ensuring that all equipment is ready for students to use Ensure that the University’s commitment to sustainability is embraced within the operations the technical service of the faculty so that waste and energy consumption is reduced.
The Person
This exciting role is for an applicant that has a first degree in fashion or equivalent relevant experience
You will have:
Excellent communication organisational and presentational skills.
Proven ability to work collaboratively with people to achieve positive results
Ability to work effectively under pressure
Able to demonstrate and instruct the use of Domestic Knit machines, Dubied knit machines, linkers and overlockers.
Ability to Assist and demonstrate to students how to produce garments to a high standard, to support student projects using a wide range of and yarns trims and materials during the non-busy times you will be expected to assist in the Sewing Rooms eg. preparing and cutting out for workshops and demonstrations. Assisting sewing technicians in the workshop in other studios with-in the Fashion Department.

This is a part time (22.2 hours), permanent position, with a starting salary of £20,404.20 (60% to £34,007) per annum.
