Main duties of the job

As a key member of the leadership team, you will drive strategic transformation across cancer pathways, leading programmes that enhance clinical outcomes, operational performance, and patient experience. You will work collaboratively with clinical, operational, and system partners to redesign services, embed innovation, and deliver sustainable improvements across the cancer portfolio.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Lead the development and delivery of strategic transformation programmes across cancer services
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives, focusing on performance, quality, and patient outcomes
  • Translate national cancer priorities into local delivery plans, ensuring alignment with the NHS Long Term Plan and national cancer strategy
  • Work in partnership with clinicians, regional networks, and system stakeholders to redesign pathways and improve access, timeliness, and equity of care
  • Identify and implement innovative approaches to service delivery, including use of data, digital tools, and new models of care
  • Provide strong programme leadership, governance, and assurance across complex transformation initiatives

You will be an experienced leader with a strong track record in service improvement and transformation within a healthcare setting. You will bring strategic insight, operational expertise, and a passion for improving cancer care.

Qualifications, Education and Development

Essential criteria
  • Postgraduate Degree or equivalent level
  • Further evidence of management/leadership training and continuous professional development
  • GMC registration

Job Related Skills

Essential criteria
  • A senior clinician from any professional background.
  • Experience of holding senior clinicians to account for standards of care
  • Shows commitment to the leadership role of Clinical Director to promote a focus on patient experience and clinical outcomes for patients
  • Has the credibility to be a clinical leader by way of demonstrable clinical excellence and being able to command trust from colleagues

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the provision and delivery of health care services and of Government’s strategy and plans for modernizing health care
  • Thorough knowledge of the structure, functions, culture and values of the National Health Service and its inter-relationship with other agencies.
