Autism Teaching Assistant - Romford
We are seeking a calm, patient, and dedicated Autism Teaching Assistant to join a supportive and inclusive primary school in Romford, starting as soon as possible. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting pupils with autism and helping them succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
The school has a strong inclusive ethos and experience supporting pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). The SEN team works closely with class teachers, parents, and external professionals to provide structured and personalised support. Senior leadership is approachable and highly supportive of SEN staff.
As an Autism Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with pupils with autism, either on a 1:1 basis or in small groups, supporting them throughout the school day. You will help pupils access learning, develop communication skills, manage sensory needs, and build positive relationships.
Key Responsibilities

Work 1:1 or in small groups within the classroom and specialist spaces
Support communication, social interaction, and emotional regulation
Implement strategies from EHCPs, behaviour plans, and support programmes
Help pupils access the curriculum through differentiated activities
Support sensory regulation and structured routines
Encourage independence and positive behaviour
Work closely with teachers, SENCO, and external professionals
Monitor and record progress, providing regular feedback
Follow safeguarding and inclusion policies at all times
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will:
Have experience supporting pupils with autism in a school or similar setting
Be patient, calm, and empathetic
Have a strong understanding of autism and inclusive practice
Be confident supporting sensory, communication, and behaviour needs
Have strong communication and teamwork skills
Be reliable, resilient, and adaptable
Be committed to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing
Experience using visual supports, structured routines, or autism-specific strategies is highly desirable. However, the school is also open to candidates with transferable experience and a strong desire to work in autism support.
The school is located in Romford, with good transport links and a welcoming local community. Staff benefit from a collaborative working environment and ongoing support within SEN roles.
How to Apply
