Marchant Recruitment
Harrow, Greater London

A large and well-respected 11–18 secondary school in Harrow is seeking a dedicated and skilled Teacher of English to join its successful department. The school has a strong academic profile, with consistently positive GCSE outcomes and a growing Sixth Form cohort choosing English Literature and Language at A-Level.

Serving a diverse and ambitious community, the school places literacy at the heart of its curriculum. The English department plays a central role in whole-school improvement, leading reading initiatives, vocabulary development strategies and cross-curricular literacy support.

The Role

You will teach English across KS3 and KS4, with the opportunity to teach at A-Level depending on experience. The department follows a well-sequenced curriculum that balances canonical texts with contemporary voices, ensuring students engage with a broad and challenging literary diet.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Delivering high-quality English Language and Literature lessons
• Preparing students effectively for GCSE examinations
• Supporting the development of reading, writing and analytical skills
• Contributing to curriculum planning and assessment moderation
• Participating in enrichment activities such as debating, theatre trips or reading clubs

There is scope for future progression within the department for candidates who demonstrate strong impact.

The English Department

The English team is collaborative, well-led and highly structured. Schemes of work are carefully mapped, and shared resources ensure consistency across year groups while still allowing teachers autonomy in delivery.

Department strengths include:

• Strong GCSE results and improving A-Level outcomes
• Regular departmental CPD and moderation
• Clear assessment systems
• Whole-school literacy leadership

Students are encouraged to think critically and articulate their ideas confidently, with classroom discussions forming a key part of learning.

The School

Located in Harrow with excellent transport links, the school combines high expectations with strong pastoral systems. Behaviour procedures are consistent and well-embedded, creating focused classrooms.

Leadership is visible and committed to staff wellbeing. Professional development is structured, and staff voice is valued in decision-making processes.

The school offers:

• Modern teaching facilities
• A dedicated Sixth Form centre
• A structured ECT and CPD programme
• A stable and experienced staff team

Who We’re Looking For

The successful candidate will:

• Hold QTS and a degree in English or a related subject
• Demonstrate strong subject knowledge across Language and Literature
• Deliver engaging, well-structured lessons
• Maintain high standards of behaviour and academic expectation
• Contribute positively to departmental development

Applications are welcomed from experienced teachers and ambitious ECTs.

What’s On Offer

• A high-performing Harrow secondary school environment
• A well-led and supportive English department
• Clear behaviour systems and structured curriculum
• Strong professional development pathways
• Opportunities for progression within a growing faculty

This is an excellent opportunity for an English specialist seeking to work in a structured, ambitious and well-supported school in Harrow.
