Business Night Reporter (Hiring Immediately)
About The Role
The principal responsibility of the late reporter is to help the desk maintain around-the-clock coverage of the day’s biggest stories by running our business live blog from the afternoon onwards and covering late breaking stories beyond GMT office hours. You will also help to update the business team’s output when stories develop.
Key Responsibilities
- Taking over the running of business live blogs from 3pm onwards
- Monitoring news wires and websites for breaking business and economics stories
- Liaising with the rest of the business desk and the US team in Washington to ensure breaking stories are properly covered
- Writing breaking stories precisely and at speed, covering a wide range of topics
- Curating the business page of the website and helping to upload and edit late online stories
- Liaising with night staff from other departments on breaking stories in discussion with the business night news editor and the group business editors
- Filling in overnight elements of the daily Business Briefing email newsletter
- Producing an overnight report to aid the whole Business desk's knowledge of changes to later print editions and online
- This role involves working 3pm-midnight Monday-Thursday and 12.30pm-9.30pm Friday at the Telegraph's London office.
Key Skills
- Experience in an editorial role, preferably in a business-focused environment
- Strong digital skills and ability to use desktop publishing systems
- Ability to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously and with a cool head
- Adept at working in high-pressure environment and producing high quality copy to tight deadlines
- Knowledge of digital publishing and SEO
- Previous experience of editing others’ copy would be advantageous
