About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF GRACE’S PASSION AND DEDICATION

The Environment & Communities Directorate in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories. Where dedicated people like Grace are using their skills and passion to progress environmental action in the heart of London.

It was at university where Grace first started campaigning for improved recycling facilities, water refill stations, and other eco-friendly initiatives. When she saw the real difference people could make when they came together, she knew she wanted to dedicate her career to community action for the planet.

When she joined us as Principal Engagement Officer, Climate Emergency, she quickly established herself as a passionate advocate for community outreach, engaging various stakeholders across Westminster in the social causes, impacts and solutions to climate change, air pollution, and biodiversity loss.

Grace became a driving force behind our first Citizens’ Climate Assembly, which took place across two weekends in the summer of 2023. Fifty residents were chosen at random from across our diverse communities to come together, learn about the climate emergency, and deliberate how we overcome the barriers to becoming a net zero city by 2040. The assembly produced several recommendations which have informed the evolution of our Climate Emergency Action Plan. Due to the success of this initiative, we’re holding more assemblies to continue community involvement in local decision-making.

The Role:

As an Operations Assistant, you can make your own powerful contribution to Westminster’s success. Working within Highways Services – a high-profile area that plays a key role in maintaining the city’s public realm – you’ll support the day-to-day operational delivery of essential services that residents rely on.

You’ll work across a range of areas, including Highways, Bridges and Structures, Arboricultural services and Climate Resilience, helping make sure operations run smoothly, and services are delivered effectively. Whether it’s supporting teams, coordinating tasks or working with colleagues and partners, you’ll play a part in keeping things moving and maintaining high standards across the service.

Collaboration will be a big part of your role. You’ll work closely with colleagues, partners and stakeholders, contributing to a joined-up approach that helps build a sustainable and effective organisation. Along the way, you’ll lead by example, modelling the Council’s values and behaviours in how you work day to day.

Overall, this is a role where you’ll support the delivery of services that directly impact the look, feel and safety of the city – helping maintain Westminster’s reputation while contributing to a service that delivers real value for residents.

Please refer to the for more information.

About You:

You’ll bring an understanding of working within a highways function, with some knowledge of relevant legislation such as the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, the Highways Act 1980 and Road Traffic legislation – or the ability to pick this up and apply it confidently.

Comfortable working in a service delivery role, you’ll build good stakeholder relationships and help resolve issues in a timely way. You’ll also be able to support policy development, analysis, advice and stakeholder briefings, using information to build a clear fact base for decision-making.

You’ll be organised and practical, able to spot improvement opportunities, identify and escalate risks, and contribute to clear responses to Freedom of Information requests and enquiries. Understanding customer needs and responding in a way that aligns with Council objectives will be important too.

Able to work well both independently and as part of a team, you’ll stay calm under pressure and keep the wider team’s objectives in mind. With a commitment to equality and diversity, good accuracy, sound technical judgement and confidence using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, you’ll help support a service that keeps improving.
