An exciting opportunity has arisen for Staff Nurse at the Camberwell Sexual Health Clinic which is at the Denmark Hill site on a fixed term contract for 6 months.

To fulfil this role, you much have a genuine interest in sexual health. You will need to have some knowledge and understanding of sexual health and HIV.

You will have excellent communication skills, organised, resilient and able to meet the challenges and demands of a busy and diverse clinical service.

The successful applicant will need to demonstrate high standards in clinical care and have the ability to improve quality and patient satisfaction.

This is a great opportunity to develop your knowledge of sexual health in a specialist area.

Main duties of the job

  • To be responsible for the assessment of individual service users’ needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of care delivery in a multi-disciplinary changing environment. This will require commitment to caring for people attending for screening and treatment of sexually transmitted infections as well as those with contraception needs including termination of pregnancy.
  • To take responsibility for managing and co-ordinating the department in the absence of more senior staff.
  • To participate in the teaching and supervision of junior staff and student nurses as required.
  • To ensure that nursing practice is safe and the quality of care is of a high standard.
  • To provide appropriate information, advice, health education and support to meet the needs of service users through skilled interpersonal interaction
  • Particular emphasis is placed at Kings on the need to ensure that all staff recognise their responsibility to deliver services in a high quality, courteous, patient-focused manner maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Practice:

  • To deliver a high standard of evidence-based care to a specified group of patients.
  • To adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times.
  • To be responsible for the nursing care and management of service users according to national Trust and local policies, guidelines and proforma's.
  • To maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • To demonstrate clinical expertise in the care of any patients receiving treatment across the integrated sexual and reproductive service following agreed clinic protocols. This includes:

- Performing accurate microscopy of genital slides.

- Performing and ordering other diagnostic tests.

- Male and female genital examination.

- Venepuncture.

- Cryotherapy.

- Sexual history taking.

- Pre-test discussion for HIV.

- Running Nurse-led clinics in rotation with other Nursing staff.

- Administering medication following departmental PGD’S.

  • To be competent in the taking of male and female genital swabs, ensuring that all specimens are correctly labelled and stored in accordance with local and Trust policies.
  • To be involved in the health education of patients and relatives, identifying each opportunity to promote a healthy lifestyle.
  • To liaise effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) in order to ensure that patients’ needs are met and that services are delivered in accordance with National Service Frameworks and agreed Clinical Care Guidelines.
  • To ensure that relevant information regarding the patients’ needs / condition are communicated to the MDT and that any instructions are acted upon.
  • To be aware of the need to adhere to the Trust’s policy on valuing equality and diversity in the workplace, which incorporates the patients’ / visitors’ and staff perspective.
  • To have due regard for each patient’s cultural and religious beliefs and to respect each patient’s privacy, dignity, gender and sexuality.
  • To acknowledge personal limitations in patient care and seek advice from senior staff members.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (RN1) with active UK NMC registration at time of starting appointment

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Awareness and understanding of current acute health issues and to the relevant area

Desirable criteria
  • Clinical expertise relevant to the area

Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other staff members
  • Able to demonstrate respect to people regardless of their age, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, belief, disability or health
