Westminster Producer

ITV Regional News Political Unit

Employment type: 6-month contract | Full-time

Hiring range: £33,000 - £38,000

Office working in our Westminster Bureau, occasional travel around the UK

The team

We’re looking for a producer to work in our Regional Political Unit. A producer who’d be at the centre of our political coverage and who would be at the heart of the ITV News’ digital transformation, working with our regional Political Correspondents and alongside the network team.

You’ll be mainly working with our regional news Political Correspondents and Editors to tell politics stories from across the UK that resonate with audiences. Your main roles would be creating social video, conducting interviews and assigning crews - but you’ll need to be versatile as you’ll be collaborating with journalists from multiple newsrooms.

You’ll be working with award-winning editorial team who pride themselves on producing hard hitting and high impact political content.

You’ll need to be passionate and knowledgeable about politics and how it is told to our audiences across the ITV Regions and Nations.

The role

You’ll be responsible for ensuring political digital content - mainly social video - is produced and published at the highest level and that it is accurate and compliant.

You will be a qualified journalist with a depth of experience, including planning and interviewing.

As such, you will be able to demonstrate your journalistic skills, editorial judgement and digital knowledge, so that you make our news content engaging and relevant to our audiences.

You will be an excellent communicator and a team player. We feel strongly that our stories should be accessible to people from all backgrounds and we aim to attract and then nurture talent from under-represented backgrounds, so it’s important that you are committed to telling stories with particular appeal to a diverse range of viewers.

You’ll understand how to create videos for social platforms, research and write.

You’ll ensure content is accurate and brilliantly presented, with sharp editing and writing, digital-focused headlines and making use of the best pictures, video and other multimedia assets. You’ll generate creative solutions to presenting content online.

Enthusiasm, imagination and digital ideas are all essential as is the ability to respond well under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines. Your strong news sense and judgement will define you in this role.

There is a small element of admin within this role, including crew rotas and occasional travel booking.

Skills you’ll need (minimum criteria)

  • You’ll be a trained journalist with NCTJ qualification or equivalent
  • Assist running our political newsdesk
  • Be able to create video, plus research and write content
  • Proficient at editing pictures
  • Planning experience, ideally with Wolftech experience
  • Strong political knowledge
  • Make our news content engaging and relevant to our audience online
  • Play an active role in telling stories with particular appeal to a diverse range of viewers

Other things we’re looking for (key criteria)

  • Experience of working effectively in a team environment
  • The ability to prioritise work accurately within tight deadlines whilst responding effectively under pressure to changing running orders
  • Experience in editing within Premiere Pro
  • Experience of filming/self-shooting
  • Understanding of social media trends and trending topics
  • Knowledge of ITV’s Legal & Compliance, ITV Trust and OFCOM guidelines.
  • A clear grasp of the ITV News Regional Network structure and its place within the ITV News landscape

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is at the heart of what we do at ITV, and we want to ensure we reflect our audience both on screen and in our workforce. ITV is for Everyone and we encourage applications from Deaf, Disabled and Neurodivergent people and People of Colour to apply for this role.

Newsrooms are busy and pressurised environments, involving live news production, which often requires colleagues to make quick decisions under pressure. We also need people who are able to use their initiative and, particularly for editorial roles, know what information might be required and how to research it.

We need to test these abilities at the interview stage to understand how candidates will react when operating in a pressurised environment. This is a fundamental requirement of the role. We will always consider any request for reasonable adjustments as part of the interview process, for example sharing key themes when that is requested in connection with a neurodivergent condition, whilst still ensuring that we are able to test a candidate's ability to operate in the specific environment of a newsroom.

Closing date midnight: Thursday 23rd April

Please note: Interviews will be held in person in London on 6th and 7th May
