This is an exciting opportunity to join the Education Team in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. You will join a team of 21 colleagues with remits across Student Experience, Student Support, Programmes Administration, Digital Education and Quality Assurance. This role sits within the Student Support Team.
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is seeking to appoint a Professional Personal Tutor role, with a focus on supporting Postgraduate Taught students in one of our academic departments.
These roles will be part of the Faculty Education Team and based in the relevant academic department.
About the role:
The Professional Personal Tutor will develop and deliver a range of academic interventions to support students during their time studying with us. The role will work closely with a range of stakeholders at all levels, including the Senior Student Support Manager, Senior Tutor and Head of Department, whilst centring students at the core of all their work.
This is a fast-paced role, and the successful candidate will need to confidently and efficiently balance their day-to-day work with student meetings.
The Professional Personal Tutor will plan and deliver a year-long programme of Personal Tutoring which must include group tutorials, 1-2-1 meetings, and study skills workshops as well as study/university skills workshops collaborating with specialist teams to enhance the programme offering.
You will coherently offer advice and guidance to students on their studies and appropriately refer into relevant specialist support services, and act as a liaison between Programme Teams, Module/Programme Leads and the Faculty pastoral team (Senior Tutors and Student Support) to identify and discuss student concerns.
This role is student facing and requires in person and online student meetings, as well as the online and in person delivery of seminars and workshops. The role holder will spend a minimum of 40% of their time on campus during term time, with the expectation that they adapt accordingly to the demand for on-campus activities. Due to the nature of this role, annual leave during term time will be limited.
This is a full-time post and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable experience of supporting the academic development of students from a wide range of backgrounds in a Further or Higher Education institution.
- Experience of developing and implementing strategies and services for supporting student development and wellbeing.
- Demonstrate a proactive approach adapting processes in response to changing stakeholder demands.
- Highly skilled in successfully influencing and persuading a range of key stakeholders, and able to build and maintain effective relationships.
- Proven commitment to provide a consistently high standard of service to stakeholders.
- Highly organised and able to prioritise complex caseloads effectively.
- Knowledge of evaluation methods and analysis and experience producing management information and reports.
- Educated to degree level with a strong understanding and experience of university study.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in an advisory and pastoral care role, with relevant safeguarding and Mental Health First Aid training.
- Proven ability to deal with sensitive and urgent situations and people in distress in an appropriate and professional manner.
- Ability to work well when self directed, as part of a team, and under management direction.
- Awareness of when to signpost students to appropriate support services, including those relating to wellbeing or academic studies
