Location: Salford or London office – 1 to 2 days a week. This is a hybrid role, and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working

We are hiring a Software Engineering Manager to lead our newly formed Account Platform Group, part of a strategic restructure to scale identity and access services for millions of users. Interview process

• First stage - Virtual and 60 minutes - This is the first stage and consists of an interview with a focus on following lasting 60 minutes. The aim of this section is to discuss your experience of leadership and teams.

• Second Stage - Virtual and 60 minutes - The overall interview is for an hour and consists of a talk from you for 20 minutes which you will prepare based on brief provided to you a week in advance and Q&A from panel. The aim of this section is to discuss your experience of leadership and teams.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT

As a Software Engineering Manager, you will lead multiple engineering teams focused on building and evolving the BBC’s Account Platform. You’ll be responsible for delivering a trusted and scalable foundation that powers secure identity, access management, and platform capabilities across our portfolio.

You will directly line manage Software Engineering Team Leaders and Principal Engineers, and work closely with peers in Architecture, Product, and Delivery to guide technical strategy and execution. You’ll shape our platform-first strategy, foster engineering excellence, and enable long-term sustainability.

This role is central to our ambition to simplify and modernise our access management systems, support global growth, and accelerate time-to-market for audience-facing products. You’ll also help define engineering culture, technical standards, and ways of working across the group.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

People

• Experience leading multiple software engineering teams focused on platform capabilities
• Proven ability to recruit, grow, and coach engineering talent and emerging leaders
• Commitment to building inclusive, diverse, and high-performing teams
• Ability to foster a culture of ownership, curiosity, and continuous improvement

Delivery

• Skilled at managing stakeholders across Product, UX&D, Architecture, and Delivery
• Track record of delivering complex technical solutions at scale
• Comfortable navigating ambiguity and driving clarity in fast-moving environments
• Experience aligning teams to shared OKRs, engineering principles, and planning rituals

Technical

• Deep understanding of platform architecture, access management systems, and identity services
• Experience with DevOps practices and ensuring high availability of platform services
• Strong grasp of service design, infrastructure-as-code, and cloud-native engineering
Passion for improving engineering craft, tooling, and operational resilience
