About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF KATE’S DESIRE TO ENCOURAGE POSITIVE CHANGE

Public Health at Westminster is a world of extraordinary stories, where inspired professionals like Kate are using all their knowledge and talents to improve our communities and offer support and advice to the people who live in them.

Kate lives with dyslexia and dyspraxia, and although she was told throughout her childhood that she would never gain the qualifications she’d need to get to university, she proved her doubters wrong, and successfully earned a degree and a Masters degree in Public Health. While studying, she also worked for a company that organises adventure holidays and trips for children, and this gave her the opportunity to develop her people skills and grow in confidence.

After university she spent some time working for a large organisation, but found it wasn’t for her – it was only when she joined Westminster that she discovered an environment that understood her neurodivergence, supported diversity and embraced inclusivity.

Since joining us, she’s worked seamlessly across our services on a number of different plans and schemes. Now, as a Senior Public Health Strategist, she’s delivering programmes that protect and promote the health and wellbeing of everyone who lives and works in our borough, with a particular focus on the healthy weight agenda.

Compassionate, caring and committed to supporting her colleagues, she considers neurodiversity to be her superpower, and in addition to the work she does for our residents, is a key member of our ABLE Network, which is a group of staff with disabilities and long-term conditions.

One of her most successful projects has involved working in partnership with the council’s highways team to secure the investment needed to install bike stations in some of the more deprived and under-served areas of our borough. It’s an initiative that allows people on low incomes to use a bike for £5 a month, for an unlimited number of rides. This gives them the opportunity to get out and about, attend appointments and meet with friends – all while keeping fit and healthy.

In a world where the importance of inclusion is often underappreciated, and the strength to be found in diversity is sometimes overlooked, Public Health at Westminster is determined to encourage positive, life-improving change. Because we believe there is strength in difference and joy to be found when everyone – regardless of who or what they are – is given the opportunity to enjoy the life and vibrancy of our amazing city.

The Role:

As a Senior Public Health Campaigns and Partnerships Strategist you can make your own powerful contribution to Westminster’s success. Our dynamic, high profile Public Health team serves the diverse communities of both Westminster and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and when you join us in this vital role you’ll oversee the design, development and implementation of our communication strategy. Designed to encourage our residents to live healthy, happy and fulfilled lives, our strategic plans include a number of campaigns, programmes and projects, and we’ll expect you to provide the coordination, stakeholder management and specialist advice we need to deliver our objectives and priorities.

Working collaboratively with colleagues, partners and other stakeholders as you help to build a sustainable, highly effective organisation, you’ll have a strong focus on growing our reputation as a successful council that delivers great value for its residents. Developing and managing effective partnerships with a number of other groups and organisations, and proactively identifying communication synergies between public health priorities and our corporate aspirations, we’ll also expect you to identify effective interventions, channels and tools to engage audiences, influence perceptions and change behaviour.

But your work won’t stop here – we’ll also expect you to provide your colleagues and senior management with specialist communication-based expertise and guidance relating to the identification and response to risk, and support informed decision making and the resolution of issues. Supervising and leading small teams, and helping them to develop their knowledge and expertise, you’ll maintain the highest possible standards of professionalism at all times, role model our values and behaviours, and promote the aims of the council’s equity and diversity policies in the course of your day-to-day work.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information.

About You:

To be a success in this fast-paced, exciting role, you should have well developed experience of leading and implementing communications and press activities, and the ability to establish and manage complex communications systems, draft press releases and liaise with press offices. With excellent organisational and planning abilities, you should also possess the diplomatic skills to work in a political environment, and have good practical knowledge of the health and local government system.

Capable of managing our delivery partners to achieve specified outputs, and with proven experience of developing and sustaining effective and productive partnerships, you’ll be skilled at using the full range of communication tools, techniques and channels, including digital and social media to deliver communication messages, website content and layouts. We’ll also expect you to have an up to date understanding of the Public Health system, experience of leading, motivating and inspiring staff, the ability to initiate change and the confidence to challenge, coach and advise service and line managers on the delivery of policy plans and objectives.

It goes without saying that you’ll have excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills, and as a multi-tasking project manager you’ll be capable of managing tight deadlines, using your own initiative, working independently and collaborating as part of a tight-knit team. We’ll also expect you to have communications/marketing and health promotion postgraduate qualifications or relevant equivalent experience, and be committed to keeping up to speed with best practice in communications, programme management and Public Health.
