About Us:
THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF KAKOLI’S PASSION AND DRIVE
Children’s Services in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories. Where inspirational people like Kakoli are dedicated to encouraging everyone they work with to be the very best they can be.
Ever since she was a child, Kakoli has believed that children are the ones who’ll change the world for the better. Who’ll create the future we all wish for. And she always knew her calling was to get on the front line and help those who might not be as fortunate as herself.
Driven and passionate about making a difference, she first joined Westminster as a Social Work Assistant, and her managers immediately saw she had huge potential, so they encouraged her to apply to study for a degree in social work. She passed with flying colours, and over the next fourteen years worked as a frontline Social Worker, a Senior Social Worker, a Deputy Service Manager and is now one of our Service Managers.
Kakoli’s vision is as clear now as it was all those years ago – to encourage and support children, and help them grow in safe, vibrant communities. Her achievements are many, but she’s most proud of the fact that these days Westminster doesn’t ‘do things for families’ but ‘does things with families’. And she believes this huge but subtle difference to the way we work has allowed thousands of children in Westminster to fulfil their potential and live their dreams.
The Role:
As Personal Adviser in the Children’s Social Work and Leaving Care Service, you too can make a powerful contribution. Your work will have a direct impact on the lives of care leavers (age 18 – 25) as they transition into adulthood and independence.
You’ll contribute to the assessments, formulation, implementation and review of Pathway Plan through direct interventions and full engagement of the young person. Plus, you’ll work collaboratively with colleagues across agencies to secure joined-up provision. From figuring out finances to signing a tenancy agreement, you’ll give young people the necessary practical skills to help them be ready for adulthood. You’ll support them emotionally too. Coaching, building self-esteem and confidence.
Through regular contact, you’ll ensure that care leavers are adjusting well. You’ll check that they are in suitable accommodation. And that they are in education or employment suited to their abilities and aspirations.
A growing number of asylum seekers, including unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) and young people, are passing through or settling in Westminster. With their complex needs, they present a unique challenge, but one that our team are committed to meeting with our innovative trauma-focused model.
It can be a difficult balancing act. Liaising with stakeholders and supporting a diverse range of young people with differing experiences – including trauma, mental health issues, and housing instabilities. All while navigating budget constraints and staffing pressures. Yet, it’s deeply rewarding to see progression in the young people we work with.
We’re a multidisciplinary team, rated Outstanding by Ofsted. Each of us is committed to developing our expertise in our respective fields. Our work is rarely straightforward, but we’re passionate, and find great fulfilment in securing positive outcomes for the young people of Westminster. We’re super supportive of each other and encourage everyone to bring their whole selves to work.
Please refer to the for more information.
About You:
You’ve worked with vulnerable children, young adults and families, all in accordance with statutory guidance. This may have been directly in partnership with local authority children’s services. Or you’ve worked in settings such as health, housing, youth and employment, which will have given you transferrable skills and knowledge for this role. In whichever setting, you worked collaboratively with a range of professionals to protect and support children, young adults and their families to achieve effective change.
You have a strong grasp of how to safeguard and support children and young people, in accordance with the expectations set out in the Children Act 1989 and the Leaving Care Act 2000.
We’d like to be confident supporting the assessment and engagement of families from a range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. You can effectively adjust to their particular needs and work directly with the child.
Importantly, you’re experienced at working with children and young people with particularly challenging behaviours and underlying vulnerabilities. You can engage them, even when times are difficult. Good verbal and written communication skills will both be useful.
You’re organised: able to balance the competing demands of direct work, undertaking practical tasks, record keeping and following statutory processes.
Also, you’re comfortable assessing needs, analysing information, implementing SMART plans of action – and ensuring all is clearly communicated. We’d like you to learn and use models of practice to support meaningful interventions and to manage the personal impact of the work.
You’re educated to A level (or equivalent) or have extensive experience of directly working with children, young people, their parents and carers to effect positive change.
