Caretaker | Vibrant Primary School | Harrow

Marchant Recruitment
Harrow, Greater London

CORE PURPOSE

We require a practical, reliable Caretaker to support the day-to-day operational upkeep, security, and cleanliness of our primary school campus. Operating within a close-knit facilities team, the successful candidate will carry out essential maintenance, security routines, porterage duties, and statutory compliance checks to ensure a safe, warm, and welcoming environment for our young pupils, staff, and families.

THE SCHOOL

A three-form entry primary school (Ages 3–11) located in Harrow, North West London. The school provides a nurturing, values-led environment with a strong emphasis on outdoor play and safety. The premises and site team work directly alongside senior leadership, utilizing simple digital task logging to ensure facilities requests, equipment setups for assemblies or early years outdoor spaces, and maintenance tasks are handled quickly during standard working hours.

KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS

  • Site Security & Access: Manage daily opening and locking-up procedures, securing perimeter gates, checking primary playground equipment, and setting intruder alarms.

  • General Maintenance & Repairs: Perform first-line general maintenance, painting, basic carpentry, plumbing repairs, and unblocking fixtures to keep classroom and nursery facilities in excellent condition.

  • Statutory Compliance Checks: Complete routine health and safety checks, including weekly fire alarm testing, emergency lighting checks, and water temperature monitoring (legionella flushing), recording data in digital compliance logs.

  • Porterage & Primary Setup: Handle delivery distribution, moving furniture, and setting up the main hall for primary assemblies, school dinners, nativity plays, and parent events.

  • Grounds & Grounds Upkeep: Oversee campus grounds cleanliness, ensuring early years play areas, walkways, and entrances remain free of hazards, litter, and adverse weather risks (salting pathways in winter).

PROFILE REQUIREMENTS

  • Qualifications: A basic health and safety or manual handling certificate is desirable. A full, clean UK driving license is advantageous.

  • Experience: Practical experience in caretaking, general DIY, building maintenance, or site operations, ideally within a primary school, early years setting, or community facility.

  • Skills: Strong practical handyperson skills, self-motivation, a friendly and approachable manner with staff and parents, and a reliable working style.

REGIONAL CONTEXT

  • Local Area & Community: Based in the historic North West London borough of Harrow, the school serves an ambitious and diverse suburban community. The area combines iconic heritage sites like Harrow-on-the-Hill, vibrant local high streets, expansive green spaces such as Harrow Recreation Ground and Pinner Memorial Park, and a supportive network of families.

  • Transport & Commuting: The school benefits from strong regional transport links, with direct road access via the A404, A41, and nearby M1 motorway corridor. Transit connectivity is exceptional, with comprehensive local bus routes and fast Underground and National Rail links via Harrow-on-the-Hill, Harrow & Wealdstone, and Rayners Lane (Metropolitan, Piccadilly, and Bakerloo lines, alongside London Overground and West Midlands Trains).
