Site Assistant | Bromley
The Opportunity
Are you a practical, hands-on individual who takes pride in creating a safe and welcoming environment? Can you be the proactive "engine room" of a school campus, ensuring that the buildings and grounds are perfectly maintained to support the education of over a thousand students?
We are seeking a reliable and motivated Site Assistant to join a dedicated estates team in Bromley . Known for its perfect balance of London energy and Kent’s "Garden of England" greenery, Bromley is a borough that values high standards and community pride. We are looking for an individual who is ready to take ownership of the school site, from the morning unlock to the final security sweep of the evening.
Core Responsibilities
Site Security & Access: Carrying out the daily opening and closing procedures of the school, including the operation of intruder alarms, CCTV monitoring, and ensuring all points of entry are secure.
Maintenance & Handyperson Tasks: Performing a wide range of minor repairs, including basic carpentry, plumbing, painting, and furniture assembly, to ensure the school remains in "as-new" condition.
Health & Safety Compliance: Assisting the Site Manager with essential safety checks, including fire alarm testing, emergency lighting inspections, and maintaining clear escape routes.
Porterage & Logistics: Coordinating the physical setup for school events, such as public examinations, assemblies, and parents' evenings—this includes the efficient moving of furniture and equipment.
Grounds Care: Ensuring the school’s external environment is safe and tidy, including litter management, basic gardening, and urgent seasonal tasks such as gritting and snow clearance.
Contractor Support: Acting as a point of contact for external maintenance contractors, ensuring they are signed in correctly and follow the school’s strict safeguarding and health and safety protocols.
Why This School?
Bromley’s Unique Setting: Work in a school that benefits from the borough’s expansive green spaces and high academic expectations, providing a rewarding and professional backdrop for your work.
A Vital Team Role: Join a site team that is highly integrated into the school community, where the "behind-the-scenes" staff are recognized as essential to the school's daily success.
Varied & Active Workday: Escape the desk-bound life with a role that keeps you moving, offering a mix of indoor and outdoor tasks across a large, modern campus.
Professional Development: Access to training in Health & Safety (IOSH) , First Aid at Work , COSHH , and pathways toward Site Manager or Estates Director roles.
Candidate Profile
Experience: Previous experience in a caretaking, facilities, or maintenance role is highly desirable. Experience in a school or other regulated public-sector environment is a significant advantage.
Technical Skills: A competent "handyman" skill set with the ability to use a variety of hand and power tools safely and effectively.
Physical Resilience: The role is physically active and requires the ability to walk the site frequently, lift heavy equipment, and work at heights (ladder work) following proper training.
Reliability: A punctual and dependable approach to work, with the flexibility to work on a shift-rota basis (e.g., early shifts or late shifts) as required.
Character: A proactive, helpful, and professional individual who understands the importance of safeguarding and takes pride in providing a top-tier environment for students.
