Main duties of the job
As a Clinical Practice Facilitator, you’ll be a visible role model, supporting staff and students in our Day Surgery Unit, 23 Hour Ward, and Theatres at PRUH.
You’ll deliver hands-on supervision, coaching and feedback, helping colleagues build confidence and competence in perioperative care.
You’ll coordinate induction, foster a positive and inclusive learning environment, and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, evidence-based care. Strong communication, organisational skills and a passion for education are essential.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
As a Clinical Practice Facilitator (CPF) in the Day Surgery Unit, 23 Hour Ward, and Theatres at PRUH, you will play a key role in supporting the education, development, and clinical practice of both registered and non-registered staff, as well as students on placement. Your work will help ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality patient care in line with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust values.
Clinical Education & Workforce Development
- Provide visible, hands-on clinical supervision, coaching, and feedback to staff and students, supporting their learning and development.
- Coordinate and deliver induction programmes for new staff and students, ensuring a smooth introduction to clinical areas.
- Support the achievement of clinical competencies through supervised practice, teaching sessions, and regular feedback.
- Work closely with the Practice Development Nurse (PDN) and senior nursing leadership to identify training needs and deliver relevant education.
- Maintain accurate records of training, competency progression, and learning activities.
- Promote a positive, inclusive learning environment where all staff and students feel valued and supported.
Quality, Governance & Service Improvement
- Ensure practice aligns with NMC/HCPC standards, Trust policies, and national guidelines.
- Support the implementation of new policies, pathways, and guidelines within clinical areas.
- Contribute to clinical audit, quality assurance, and service improvement initiatives.
- Escalate concerns relating to practice, competence, or patient safety appropriately.
- Promote reflective practice and shared learning across the team.
Leadership & Professional Development
- Act as a role model for high standards of clinical practice, professionalism, and compassionate care.
- Support junior staff and learners through coaching, feedback, and supervision.
- Demonstrate specialist skills in perioperative care, including anaesthetics, scrub, recovery, and ward-based practice.
- Participate in appraisal, objective setting, and personal development planning.
- Maintain your own clinical competence and professional development in line with revalidation requirements.
Collaborative Working
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including nurses, ODPs, healthcare assistants, medical staff, and education providers.
- Foster effective working relationships and contribute positively to the learning culture within clinical environments.
- Support recruitment and retention initiatives locally and Trust-wide.
Clinical Duties
- Maintain clinical competence and provide safe, effective patient care during periods of staffing pressure.
- Work clinically alongside staff and learners to support education and service delivery.
Research, Audit & Evidence-Based Practice
- Support evidence-based practice by engaging with current research and best practice guidance.
- Participate in audit and quality improvement activities.
- Encourage staff to engage in reflective practice and continuing professional development.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- UK NMC Registered Nurse / HCPC Registered ODP
- First degree in Nursing / Operating Department Practice
- Recognised post-registration teaching, assessing or mentoring qualification – qualified Practice Supervisor / Practice Assessor
- Evidence of clinical expertise and specialist skills in Perioperative Practice (i.e., anaesthetics, scrub and recovery, surgical ward) through formal qualification at degree level (Level 6)
Desirable criteria
- Leadership or management training
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive post-registration experience of working in perioperative practice or operating theatre department – in at least one perioperative discipline (i.e., anaesthetics, scrub and recovery)
- Experience of supporting students or new starters in clinical practice
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in elective orthopaedics with comprehensive scrub knowledge and understanding of various standard and complex operations such as primary and revision arthroplasty, arthroscopy, ligamentoplasty, minimally invasive surgery and limb reconstruction.
