The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures is a vibrant, interdisciplinary unit that offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Modern Languages and Comparative Literature. It is one of five UK institutions ranked in the QS top 30 for Modern Languages and received 100% 4* ranking for research environment in REF2021.
Teaching and research in the Department stretches across five continents and over 2,500 years of literature, culture and history. Academics and students study languages and literatures as transnational phenomena in a global context, seeking to further the understanding of their cultural and societal impact.
About the role
The Faculty of Arts & Humanities wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Spanish. Located in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, the purpose of this role is to provide teaching and research in the literature, film, media, performance studies or cultural studies of twentieth- and/or twenty-first-century peninsular Spain. The postholder will be expected to offer teaching in modern peninsular Spanish cultural studies at undergraduate and postgraduate level, with the opportunity to develop new modules in their fields of expertise; they will also contribute to team-taught modules and language teaching, and to the administration of the department.
This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.
About you
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- PhD awarded in relevant subject area
- Proven expertise in modern peninsular Spanish literature, film, media, performance or cultural studies
- Outstanding research track record, relative to career stage
- Ability to devise, teach, convene and assess outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate modules in modern Spanish studies
- Ability to make excellent contributions to Spanish language teaching at all levels
- Excellent track record of teaching experience in HEI
- Ability to engage students, support their learning and wellbeing through their degree
- Evidence of a collaborative ethos, capacity for team-working and enthusiasm for engaging with other colleagues
- Administrative experience, in HEI or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Experience of teaching and supporting students at postgraduate level
- Experience in public engagement and/or impact activity, relative to career stage
