Lead Underwriter - Property & Casualty
Location: London (Hybrid)
Salary: £110,000 + excellent benefits A leading name in the commercial insurance market is expanding its Mid Corporate portfolio and is currently seeking a Lead Underwriter, specialising in Property and Casualty, to join its high-performing London team. Supporting a wide range of business customers — from SMEs to large corporates — this role offers a fantastic opportunity to play a pivotal part in driving growth, strengthening broker relationships, and shaping underwriting strategy at a senior level. What you’ll be doing:
- As a Lead Trading Underwriter, you’ll play a key role in delivering profitable growth while supporting the development of your team and broker panel. You will:
- Build and manage strong trading relationships within the London Market, focusing on Mid Corporate clients with a GWP of £250k+
- Develop and maintain a robust pipeline of new business opportunities, taking full ownership from initial contact to close
- Oversee engagement with your broker and client portfolio, ensuring consistent, high-quality communication and service
- Act as a referral point for complex risks, working closely with internal teams such as risk management and claims
- Champion best practices in underwriting, ensuring adherence to guidelines and effective use of tools and frameworks
- Coach and develop Senior Underwriters to enhance their technical and trading capabilities
- Promote the organisation’s strategy and product offering to unlock commercial opportunities and improve portfolio performance To succeed in this role, you'll need to bring:
- Experience within the London Market, including handling slip-based business, bespoke policy wordings, and international or captive insurance
- Strong technical expertise in Property & Casualty underwriting ideally including Construction
- A proven ability to manage large and complex cases with direct client exposure
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the confidence to engage at all levels
- Strong analytical and commercial skills, with sound judgment and a pragmatic approach to risk This role supports hybrid working, with the expectation to spend at least 3/5 of your week away from home — whether in an office, at client meetings, or attending industry events. Apply early!
