Make Lunchtimes Safe, Fun, and Structured – Midday Meal Supervisor in Enfield

Schools across Enfield are looking for reliable, patient, and friendly Midday Meal Supervisors (MDM) to help ensure children experience a safe, enjoyable, and structured lunchtime.

While the role is part-time, it is essential to the smooth running of schools. Lunchtime is more than just a meal break—it is a time when children develop social skills, independence, and the ability to manage behaviour in a less-structured environment. As a Midday Meal Supervisor, you will provide a positive influence and ensure all pupils feel safe and included.

About Schools in Enfield

Enfield schools serve a wide and diverse population and place great importance on pastoral care and wellbeing. Lunchtime supervision is considered a key part of maintaining a positive school environment.

You could be supervising children in:

  • Dining halls and serving areas during lunch

  • Outdoor playgrounds and recreational spaces

  • Wet-weather indoor play areas

  • Schools with pupils of varying ages, abilities, and backgrounds

MDMs are valued as essential members of the school team. Your presence ensures lunchtimes are well-managed, safe, and enjoyable for all children.

Your Role as a Midday Meal Supervisor

As an MDM, your responsibilities will include:

  • Supervising children during lunch in dining areas

  • Assisting younger children with trays, cutlery, and meals

  • Encouraging polite behaviour, sharing, and cooperation

  • Monitoring children with food allergies or special dietary requirements

  • Supervising playground activities, games, and free play

  • Supporting pupils who may be upset, anxious, or having difficulty socially

  • Managing low-level behavioural issues calmly and fairly

  • Reporting concerns to teaching or senior staff

  • Following school safeguarding and health & safety policies

You will be a consistent, approachable, and calm adult who supports children in navigating social interactions and unstructured time.

Who This Role Suits

Formal teaching or childcare qualifications are not required . What matters most are your personal qualities and approach to working with children.

Ideal candidates are:

  • Patient and empathetic

  • Observant and proactive

  • Friendly yet firm

  • Confident managing groups of children

  • Reliable and punctual

Many successful MDMs have backgrounds such as:

  • Parenting or caring experience

  • Nursery or early years work

  • Youth work or community support

  • Customer service roles with responsibility

  • Retirees seeking meaningful part-time work

Training and guidance will be provided to ensure you are confident in your role.

Why Lunchtime Supervision Matters

Lunchtime is a critical part of the school day when:

  • Children practise independence and social skills

  • Conflicts or accidents may occur

  • Emotional and behavioural issues can arise

  • Pupils require support navigating unstructured time

A Midday Meal Supervisor ensures:

  • Safety and wellbeing for all pupils

  • Prevention and management of conflicts

  • Positive social interactions and behaviour

  • Smooth transitions back to lessons

  • Emotional support for pupils who need it

Even though the role is short in hours, its impact on pupils is long-lasting.

Working Hours & Flexibility

  • Typically 1–2 hours per day

  • Monday to Friday

  • Term-time only

This provides excellent work-life balance and flexibility to combine with other commitments.

Support & Safeguarding

All MDM roles in Enfield require:

  • Enhanced DBS clearance

  • Safeguarding training

  • Adherence to school policies

Schools take safeguarding seriously and consider lunchtime staff a key part of maintaining a safe environment.

What You’ll Gain

  • A valued role in a school community

  • Strong relationships with pupils and colleagues

  • A sense of responsibility and purpose

  • Experience in an educational setting

  • The satisfaction of making a meaningful difference every day
