The Opportunity
A welcoming primary school is seeking a caring, organised and reliable Welfare Officer to support the physical and emotional wellbeing of its pupils.
The successful candidate will play an important role in ensuring pupils are safe, healthy and able to participate fully in school life. Working as a key point of contact for pupil welfare, the Welfare Officer will provide first aid, administer prescribed medication and support children with a range of medical and healthcare needs.
The role would suit someone who is calm, compassionate and confident working with children, parents, staff and healthcare professionals.
The Role
The Welfare Officer will be responsible for providing day-to-day medical and welfare support across the school.
Key responsibilities will include:
Acting as the first point of contact for pupils, staff or visitors who are unwell or injured during the school day.
Providing first aid in accordance with school policies and relevant requirements.
Administering prescribed medication in line with school procedures, parental consent and appropriate healthcare guidance.
Maintaining accurate and confidential records of incidents, treatments and medication administered.
Liaising professionally with parents and carers regarding pupil health and welfare matters.
Preparing and maintaining pupil care plans and ensuring medical information remains accurate and up to date.
Supporting pupils with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes and allergies in accordance with individual healthcare plans.
Maintaining records of pupil medical needs, allergies and relevant healthcare information.
Monitoring the medical room and first aid supplies and ensuring stock is replenished and stored safely.
Organising annual health-related school visits, including flu vaccinations, vision screening and the National Child Measurement Programme.
Preparing and distributing health-related communications to parents and carers regarding common illnesses and health matters.
Completing and uploading injury and incident reports to the school's designated reporting system.
Working closely with parents, healthcare professionals and external agencies where appropriate.
Providing support that may include intimate care for pupils and working with children with additional needs.
Medication Administration
The successful candidate will ensure that medication is received, stored and administered safely and appropriately.
Responsibilities will include:
Checking and maintaining medication in accordance with school procedures.
Ensuring parental consent and relevant healthcare documentation are in place.
Maintaining accurate medication records and ensuring information remains confidential.
Liaising with parents and healthcare professionals to ensure pupils receive appropriate and consistent care.
Following individual healthcare plans and agreed medical procedures.
Safeguarding & Confidentiality
The Welfare Officer will be expected to maintain a strong commitment to safeguarding and child protection at all times.
The successful candidate will:
Follow the school's safeguarding and child protection policies and procedures.
Recognise and appropriately report safeguarding concerns.
Maintain strict confidentiality when handling pupil medical and personal information.
Ensure all welfare and healthcare records are stored and managed appropriately.
Promote the wellbeing, dignity and safety of every pupil.
The Ideal Candidate
The school is looking for someone who is compassionate, dependable and confident when supporting children with a range of health and welfare needs .
The successful candidate will ideally have:
A relevant first aid qualification, such as Paediatric First Aid.
Previous experience working with children in a school, healthcare or similar setting.
Strong organisational and administrative skills.
Excellent communication skills when working with pupils, parents, carers and staff.
Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
A caring, patient and empathetic approach.
The ability to remain calm and reassuring when dealing with illness, injury or unexpected situations.
Strong attention to detail and accurate record-keeping skills.
Desirable Experience
Previous experience working in a school welfare, medical or pastoral role.
Training or experience in administering medication.
Experience managing individual healthcare plans.
Knowledge of Arbor or a similar school management information system.
Experience supporting pupils with additional or complex medical needs.
Working Environment
The Welfare Officer will primarily be based in the school's medical room but will regularly move around the school site to support pupils and respond to welfare needs.
The role involves regular interaction with pupils, staff, parents and carers, as well as healthcare professionals and external agencies.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a calm, professional and reassuring manner , particularly when dealing with pupils who are distressed, unwell or injured.
