RAC in conjunction with North London Garages have exciting opportunities for Apprentice Service Maintenance & Repair Technicians. The RAC is the UK’s leading breakdown service provider - a people-powered business of 4,000 ‘Orange Heroes’ delivering the best-in-class motoring services for both private and business drivers.

£15,500 a year
Starting with a salary of £15,500 per year in the first year and increasing to the National Living Wage in the second year (plus a £5,000 London Weighting Allowance if applicable)

Work

- As an apprentice mobile mechanic, you will complete services, repairs, and diagnostics at customers' homes or workplaces, offering a diverse range of experiences
- Throughout your qualification, you'll have access to a fully equipped, state-of-the-art company vehicle and complete tool kit, which will ensure you have the tools needed to succeed and grow

What you'll learn
Course contents- Comply with health and safety procedures in the workplace in compliance with regulations, standards, and guidance.
- Prepare the vehicle and working area before the work activity. For example, remove or mitigate slip and trip hazards.
- Maintain and restore the work area during and on completion of the activity.
- Store, maintain, including calibration checks, and return tools and equipment to storage.
- Access vehicle technical data to inform inspections and make judgements on wear and serviceability.
- Comply with environmental and sustainability procedures, regulations, standards, and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling, and disposal.
- Apply vehicle safety inspection and routine maintenance procedures using vehicle specific data on car, car derived van or light goods vehicle.
- Select and use tools and equipment, mechanical and electrical measuring tools, and diagnostic equipment.
- Remove, repair and replace vehicle tyre and balance wheel assemblies on car, car derived van or light goods vehicle. For example, ultra-low profile, directional, asymmetric, run-flat tyres.
- Inspect, remove, and replace of parts or components in cars, car derived vans, or light goods vehicles for the following: steering systems and suspension systems, braking systems, emission systems, air conditioning systems, battery and charging systems, fluid and filtration systems.
- Apply state-of-health condition monitoring tests to high voltage batteries and chargers for electrified cars, car derived vans, or light goods vehicles.
- Apply four-wheel geometry checks and adjustments to cars, car derived vans, and light goods vehicles.
- Apply safe working practices and procedures to isolate electrified vehicles for maintenance.
- Record vehicle service maintenance, parts replacement, or repair.
- Apply customer service principles and organisational customer care practices. For example, identifying customer and vehicle needs, resolve low level customer complaints, make recommendations to customers based on results of inspection, maintenance, or repair of vehicles, customer payment transactions and organisational sales processes.
- Provide quotation of cost and order automotive parts, products, and consumables applicable to the vehicle.
- Apply procedures for stock and parts storage: ordering, checking and stock rotation.
- Apply organisational sales processes. For example, show and tell, features and benefits, consultative selling, mini closing and closing.
- Apply team working principles.
- Comply with equity, diversity, and inclusion guidance.
- Communicate with others verbally, for example customers, suppliers, and colleagues.
- Communicate in writing, for example with internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers.
- Use information and digital technology systems. Comply with GDPR and cyber security.
- Complete and record learning and development activities.

Training schedule
During your apprenticeship programme you will complete a mix of both college learning and on the job training. This role will provide much more than just how to be a mechanic!
Successful candidates will by employed by the RAC and will attend college on a block basis in Enfield, working towards achieving their Level 2 Autocare Technician apprenticeship.
The programme combines college learning with hands-on training led by experienced apprentice team leaders.
You’ll enjoy variety- diagnostics, repairs, servicing, and checks and gain confidence in making decisions on the spot.
You’ll take pride in doing a quality job every time, delivering the complete peace of mind that comes from the RAC.

One of the North London Garages Training Officers and RAC Mentor will monitor/ assess your competence regularly. This is part of our close support network NLG provides to ensure that apprentices are both enjoying and succeeding in their course.

Essential qualifications
GCSE in:

Other requirements
No two days are the same, you'll enjoy varied workdays and have access to ongoing support and career progression opportunities within a large national company, allowing you to grow and develop your career. This position will include driving a company van to and from breakdown locations. Some previous work experience would be an advantage; however, it is not essential. The specific hours and days that you will be required to work and attend college will be discussed in more detail at the employer interview and by North London Garages. The successful candidate will be able to work in their local area and be required to travel to our training centre to attend for block release. This may involve commuting.
